    Num Lock not being maintained after restarting computer


    In windows 7 I could press num lock in the logon screen, and if I restarted the PC, the setting would've been maintained.

    After upgrading to windows 10, the setting is disabled after restarting the PC.


    This is very annoying as my pc password includes numbers, and I like to use the numpad.


    Is this a bug, or a super hidden setting in windows 10?

    Hi Anil,

    Thank you for your reply, however I have not had any success.

    I had num locked enabled then I followed the steps exactly... unchecked
    Turn on fast startup (recommended)     and saved the changes. I restarted the computer and num lock is still disabled on start up.

    I have also tried another forum suggested method: log in screen press num lock key to enable and then restarting from log in screen. This also did not work. Is it something to do with windows 10??

    How to keep Num Lock ON in Windows 10

    Hi,



    Usually if you have turned on Num lock and then when you restart the computer, it will be ON.

    • Does the Num lock turn off automatically?
    • Were there any changes made on the computer prior to the issue?
    • Since when are you facing this issue?
    • What is the make and model of the computer?


    Please provide us more information to assist you better.

    NUM Lock issue

    Hi Karl,

    The status of the NUM LOCK key is specific for each user, and NUM LOCK is disabled by default. If you want the NUM LOCK key enabled for use before a user presses CTRL+ALT+DEL to log on, you must use Registry Editor to change the default behavior.

    To enable NUM LOCK before a user logs on, follow these steps:

    • Run Registry Editor.
    • Move to HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\Keyboard.
    • Change the value for InitialKeyboardIndicators from 0 to 2.

    IMPORTANT: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these
