  1. nVidia latest version 341.95 causing freeze ups

    Hello
My rig is quite old now but was completely stable under Windows 8.1 and until a couple of weeks ago, I'd got it stable under 10 too. In general, since upgrading to Win 10 Pro 64 bit, I've experienced a succession of stability problems, too many of which seem to relate to nVidia drivers. Sudden freeze up problems started happening again just recently to which there was no recourse except to hard restart.

My system has two nVidia GTX280 cards and a multi monitor setup. Issues with and the updating of nVidia drivers has been the cause of delight and despair in equal measure. It wasn't until version 341.85 (for my particular cards) came out that I finally got my system stable. Anyhow, recently there was an update release (version 341.95) that installed itself courtesy of the not very controllable Windows 10 updating regime. It came in with a load of other updates. Suddenly, my system was freezing up again, as in everything would suddenly stop (including the clock) but interestingly, any audio playing at the time continued. No black screen, BSOD, warnings or errors.

As I'd experienced so many issues with the nVidia drivers in the past, my instinctive reaction was to look there first. Sure enough, a thorough safe mode uninstall then re-installation of the previous version drivers and the problem was fixed ........ until the nVidia driver updated itself again via Windows update. Grrrr!

Once again, Tenforums to the rescue. I found the thread Windows Updates - Hide or Show in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums relating to the tool that Microsoft had (quietly?) released called "wushowhide.diagcab" that allows you to temporarily stop selected updates from installing, i.e. like the hide / unhide feature in previous Windows versions.

Hooray! For the time being at least, I have a stable system again, albeit with technically an outdated video driver. I know that there are a miriad of driver related issues that seem to trip up Windows 10 quite easily but this was my latest experience and it may help somebody else to know what I did to fix it ...... this time anyway.

    Good luck with yours!

    :)

  2. NViDIA card black screen/windows in Windows 10

Was that driver version 341.95 actually *built* for Windows 10? It's up to nVidia to make a version that works on the new OS.

NVIDIA driver update for NVIDIA GeForce GTS 240 Not allowed by Windows 10

Nvidia GForce Experience tells me that there is an update for my NVIDIA GeForce GTS 240 from my current version 341.74, titled GeForce Windows 10 Driver, to 341.95, titled GeForce 341.95 Driver.

When I try to update I get the message "Unable to connect to Nvidia". After communicating with Nvidia I reinstalled GForce Experience but with no improvement. I then downloaded the updated driver and did a clean install.

Immediately after the install, Windows Update downloaded a NVIDIA driver update for NVIDIA GeForce GTS 240 and installed it (because my settings are for automatic update and install) which reverted the driver to the previous version 341.74, titled GeForce
    Windows 10 Driver.

I tried once more to update the driver and the same thing happened.

Why will Windows Update not allow me to update to the latest driver?

Nvidia say that there is no agreement between them and Microsoft to give Windows 10 Update control over the driver update process.

nVidia latest version 341.95 causing freeze ups

It's possible to set Win 10 to not update drivers through Windows Update. (It's harder to block other updates, but you can block drivers.)

System control panel, Advanced system settings, Hardware tab, Device Installation Settings. The setting was clear in the original Win 10 release (10240), but Microsoft has obfuscated it in the latest version (10586).

  5. Thanks for that reply.
I did read about that setting and it is definitely useful to know it's there.
The problem is that it seems to be all or nothing. You cannot select which hardware driver updates you want and which to "hide". The "ShowHide" tool appears to allow that level of granularity. In my particular case, it provided the solution I needed so that I could block the auto update of just the nVidia driver without affecting others.

Hi, I am using Nvidia cards, too.
I had no BSOD, but black screens at startup.

Here are some suggestions for installing a true clean Nvidia driver and to prevent further installations :

    1) Download the needed drivers for your videocard, preferably WHQL

    2) Download the Display Driver Uninstaller (aka DDU) from Display Driver Uninstaller Download version 15.7.5.5 version 15.7.5.5 or later.

    3) Download and install CCleaner if not in use and run a Analyze/ Run Cleaner cycle.

    4) Create a Windows System Restore point.

    5) You do not need uninstall existing Nvidia drivers before using DDU. Extract that DDU from the zip file obtained at step 2 . You will find an exe named DisplayDriverUninstaller.exe or DDU V15.7.5.exe.

    6) Run it: it will give you a notice to create "Restore Point", so better to create one ( if not created earlier ) Click "Yes" when it asks "Reboot in safe mode now ?" Then click on "Clean and Restart" button.

    7) Restart the computer if prompted and proceed with the clean installation of the latest driver of your Nvidia: Select ‘Custom Advanced’ at Installation options and Check ‘Perform a clean installation’.

Now you have concluded a real clean installation of your Nvidia drivers.

In order to stop further Windows Upgrade of your Nvidia drivers:

    8) http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/i...15bedc2?auth=1
    In general try: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930

    9) From the Nvidia Control Panel: NVIDIA Update | NVIDIA
Enable and disable NVIDIA Update. To disable, uncheck the Automatically check for updates checkbox.
See further details in the above link.

    Now you should be fine!
