    *Kill Hi all.
i am not sure about your good selves, however, for my part I dread microsoft updates arriving!

Having started back in the days of DOS and gradually progessed via the Microsoft chain of dross via W97,W97 second edition, good old XP, Vista, wonderful Windows 7, W8.1 to this current mess (W10 pro x64), in all this time I have never experienced so many problems as there are with the current salmonella handout from Microsoft.

I seem to spend my time constantly back tracking and sorting out installed software that used to work, but after an update
refuses to work correctly any longer. This is misery at it's worst level.

Currently after latest download fiasco, Office Outlook 2010 would not play ball, which by luck, got sorted out, whilst now, one of my games that has never given me problems whatsoever, will load start screen for 10 seconds then crashes (Heroes over Europe-Ubisoft). I have tried every compatability setting on it that's going.

Where the devil do we keep looking for solutions when Microsoft obviously is not testing thoroughly the updates it puts out and spends most of it's time hiding settings as deep as it can? They have always practiced/ counted upon us to tell them where problems are. Who is supposed to be the blasted experts?

My enjoyment of the computer is at it's lowest level ever as when I switch off at night, I dread switching back on again next day as there is another pile of dross awaiting me.
If only someone had invented a decent alternative system!

As our cousins would say," Have a nice day"*Drink1

    :)

    Some Observations

I have had this problem on both my Lenovo laptop and desktop. I hope I am not stating the obvious or missed someone else saying what I am about to say.

I noticed that your PC will kinda give you a warning when it is getting ready to throw this error message upon sign on. For me, the notifications, in the lower right hand corner and the Start button stop working. When that happens two events have either
occurred, need my attention or are about to occur.

I have already mentioned the first one, things stop responding. Second, it means that an automatic update is lurking in the wings. Third, my PC is getting ready to give me the "Critical Error" message.

On my desktop, if I press Ctrl+Alt+Del simultaneously, when the LENOVO trademark screen comes on, the PC will go to the golden (for me) set-up screen and load the update. After the update is loaded, I have no problems logging in. This does not apply to
    my laptop, for some reason.

I tried the hard boot method, but it didn't work. Instead, I selected the RESTART, instead of SHUT DOWN option. That seemed to trigger the installation of the lurking update. After the update was installed, I was able to log into my laptop, with no problem.

Now next problem, draining the battery and preventing it from charging completely. I noticed the battery no longer functioned properly during the installs for Windows 10 upgrade. I guess 1 problem at a time. Guess I'm off to Lenovo to see if there is
a patch for this problem. Please let me know if this helps anyone.

  3. Not a qustion but an observation,

There's also a forum (windowsphone.uservoice.com) that Microsoft uses for gathering feedback on the phone and suggestions for improvement. This forum is primarily a peer support forum. The UserVoice forum is the better place for making suggestions to influence
    future updates.

A nice Rant! I hope you got it off your chest.
Microsoft cannot predict what software, games, hardware or other tweaks you will do to their Operating System. So, their updates may not play nice with software you have downloaded or installed. Usually if you go to the software manufacturers support site, they have an update to their software that fixes any issues with Microsoft's update. As for Office, if it stops working for any reason, you can go to Programs and Features, right click Office and choose Change, then Repair. This usually fixes any problems with Office. If you do not update Windows, you become more vulnerable to attacks. Granted, Microsoft hiding personalization tweaks to make it "easier" for us, is annoying but there is always some geek that has figured it out to help us navigate it.

Upgrades (major builds) rather than updates can be a pain in my experience.

As you have Pro, you do have options to take control of your updates starting with

The group policy editor offers further tweaks (also see Winaero's free tweaker which gives another way of setting a couple of the same things perhaps more conveniently) - but I'd now suggest using the editor.

And don't forget active hours to control unexpected restarts (in Settings).

    I found 1703->1709 broke
    - Secureaplus (a security/AV program) which needed uninstalling and reinstalling
    - USB Safely Remove- needed reinstalling
    - Cybereason Ransomfree - needed repair install

Aeroglass inevitably needs uninstalling, as a compatible version is needed.

You can always write your own code for the OS and games in Asm if you wish. There is a reason why they have to be updated and actually required by U.S. and European law to keep the OS updated for potential issues that can break the OS or steal private information from users.

  7. The new Windows 10 regime is indeed poorly implemented.
The OP says that "I have never experienced so many problems as there are with the current salmonella handout from Microsoft."
That may indeed be a rant ... but it's also a fact.
Let's stop making excuses for poor quality.

*Mad2Rant my a--! Pure statement of facts !! Everyday occurences!

Todays treat? Same download interference from update KB4054517. My sign in details changed. Previously set up to never sign in, no one but I uses the computer. Another problem to sort out when it should not be necessary. Never has been before.

Ongoing and endless. Rubbish. You obviously work for Microsoft without any question!!

What in the world did you believe that anyone works for Microsoft? You are on a forum that is pro-Microsoft and so far hitting zero. You having issues has zero to do with the product.

    @Mothie
First let me say this accusing Users here by saying they work for MS is just bad form.
Second i do agree with you in every way, and spunks reply, well lets just say everyone is entitled to an opinion.
I made the mistake of doing a clean 1709 install after my PC crashed and would not boot due to the fact my C: drive vanished
So now i have to live with on every reboot 1 of my HD is missing and i have to reboot a couple times for every HD to show, sometimes its my Game HD i then reboot YES Game HD is back BUT now 1 of my Movie HD is missing yea its great fun.
ohh and my start menu, well i have learned to live without it meaning being able to right click it or left click to access my settings or apps.

WinKey R works so have to launch apps that way or use another keyboard shortcut, but my MS RC6 no longer works as it should i have to select most stuff with my mouse first then i can use my RC for a bit.
And i could kick myself in the head for not installing the 1703 first because i have no option to roll back.

So your not alone and accusing members for working for MS just because they have an opinion that does not agree with yours is bad form m8.
And yes when i read spunks reply well its just a rant *Biggrin
And as you i have also started with dos then windows on cotton disc yea i bet no one under 25 years old have ever seen those, i miss my C64 with tapedeck.
With my C64 and tapedeck only one approach worked when loading apps or games DO NOT BREATH AT ALL WHILE THE APP OR GAME IS LOADING
And anyone who owned a tapedeck know i speak the truth if you dared breath or scratch your nose, well you get the idea *Biggrin

  13. Observation.

To address your issue: disable Windows update and create a system image with AOMEI or Macrium.
Once updates break something, simply revert to the previous image and wait until the next update.

That would be XP slowly being replaced by Windows 7. You can still use 7 for about 10 more years.

MS never cared about customers or feedback and never will. One would think, that with Windows Insider, things would get better, but they have actually got worse. When the time comes, MS just stamps a random unstable Insider version as RTM and keeps rolling as if nothing has happened. To put it bluntly, every Windows user is an Insider now. I had problems on every computer using 10, but I have managed to tame 10 to my liking, it is far from being perfect, but it will have to do.

  14. I have had Windows 10 for almost 2 weeks. [Version 10.0.16299.125]
I have been reading lots of things on this forum from the beginning of this forum.
So that kind of gave me a heads up, to a degree.

Windows 10 is for sure a learning experience.
If it wasn't for the Ten Forum's Tutorials I would be hairless.
I'm slowly figuring out how to find things.
I'm also getting things as I want them in the most part.

Things that should be simple; like changing font size. The way Windows 7 was so simple.
With Windows 10 I have to use the tutorial by Brink to change font size.

What could be the reason to remove this. One could use this and make change and see what happened.
Keep changing things until ones eyes are happy.

    Observation. [IMG]

Now I'm not against Windows 10. There is many things I like about it.
I just wonder why some basic things that have worked well in Windows 7 were not carried over to Windows 10.

My worry is once I get things the way I want them the next upgrade comes along and I have to start all over again.

Because of watching this forum for a long time I have notice all the hell members go through after a new version is installed.
Because most threads posted are people having problems and not people that are not having problems, reading threads is some what misleading.
The end result is simple to me. What ever Microsoft does their operating systems are still the best I know of.
I gave up on Linux a couple of years ago. It was nothing but a hassle. It's kept changing the time in my bios and everything I wanted to do I had to keep entering my password.

So some how I will be a Windows 10 person on this computer and later on in time on my other computer.

Just to point out one thing I really like in Windows 10.
Windows key + X, or right tick on the Start key.
Both methods show things that I use often.
I don't have to do a bunch of ticking on a bunch of things to find basic function.
I took me two days to find this little goodie.

I like the fact that 1709 has M.S. Paint and 3D Paint. I don't use paint anything often but they are nice to have if one wants them.
I also notice that Windows Media Player is back in Windows 10.
So yes, their is a lot of nice things with this new operating system. Some are old things are kept and some new things added.

For me Windows 10 is a learning experience, like all new operating system have been.
I just don't want to have a new learning experience every few months with a Upgrade.

*ThumbsThank you Gentlemen for your inputs, very encouraging and amusing aswell.
Normally i can overcome the odd Microsoft cu's, I suppose my comments (rants) if you like, are born of this continous problem of day to day, one after the other, of changes to my OS system, in particular having just cleared up one problem to have it changed back or modified again upon restart. It is just a pointless excercise and very annoying to boot.

In the past finding/accessing a problem was far simpler than at present. Microsoft (supposedly for our good) now hides the tools to get the job done.

Age and knowledge no longer counts with this current system and I suspect it will only become worse in that respect.
Anyway, my rant has earned me an infraction for expressing my opinions.

    Good luck to you all
