    Oct 2018 Update failed -- can't install/update apps, etc

Hello, if this has been answered I apologize, and could you point me to that thread? I searched but didn't find it.

Ever since the Oct 2018 update I've had these problems: 1 Windows Update won't install updates, 2 I can't install any programs or install/update apps, and 3 MS Office apps open with the error "Microsoft Office cannot verify the license for this product. You should repair the Office program by using Control Panel." I did but it didn't fix.

I followed the instructions at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...-update-errors to no avail. Windows Troubleshooter doesn't find anything. I did install the service stack update (http://www.catalog.update.microsoft....px?q=KB4504369 - the only thing I've been able to install since this started).

I ran DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth but it failed at 89.3% with Error: 0x80246008 - DISM failed. No operation was performed. The non-"Info" lines in the log are:

Code: Warning - DISM Provider Store: PID=1432 TID=19088 Failed to load the provider: C:\Users\Drew\AppData\Local\Temp\9DD70E6B-7141-49EC-B88F-5925070C2D7F\PEProvider.dll. - CDISMProviderStore::Internal_GetProvider(hr:0x8007007e) Warning - DISM Provider Store: PID=1432 TID=19088 Failed to load the provider: C:\Users\Drew\AppData\Local\Temp\9DD70E6B-7141-49EC-B88F-5925070C2D7F\EmbeddedProvider.dll. - CDISMProviderStore::Internal_GetProvider(hr:0x8007007e) Error - DISM Package Manager: PID=1432 TID=19088 Failed finalizing changes. - CDISMPackageManager::Internal_Finalize(hr:0x80246008) Error - DISM Package Manager: PID=1432 TID=19088 Failed processing package changes with session option CbsSessionOptionRepairStoreCorruption - CDISMPackageManager::RestoreHealth(hr:0x80246008) Error - DISM Package Manager: PID=1432 TID=19088 Failed to restore the image health. - CPackageManagerCLIHandler:Oct 2018 Update failed -- can't install/update apps, etc :processCmdLine_CleanupImage(hr:0x80246008) Error - DISM Package Manager: PID=1432 TID=19088 Failed while processing command cleanup-image. - CPackageManagerCLIHandler::ExecuteCmdLine(hr:0x80246008) Error - DISM.EXE: DISM Package Manager processed the command line but failed. HRESULT=80246008[/quote] The original media is Win 7 DVD; I upgraded in place to Win 10 when MS offered that - I don't have a Win 10 DVD.

Any ideas on how to fix?

    :)

I'm not sure how differant XP media center Edition is but you could clear the history \ cache if these folders are there.

    Step 1 Register DLL files.

    =================

By trying this step, we can check if the update engines are working properly.

    1. Close all instances of Internet Explorer.

    2. Click Start and Run, type "Regsvr32 atl.dll" (without quotes) in the Open box and click OK.

Note: There is a space between regsvr32 and atl.dll

    3. Similarly, one by one, register the files listed below:

    Regsvr32 msxml3.dll

    Regsvr32 wuapi.dll

    Regsvr32 wuaueng.dll

    Regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll

    Regsvr32 wups2.dll

    Regsvr32 wucltui.dll

    Regsvr32 wups.dll

    Regsvr32 wuweb.dll

    Regsvr32 qmgr.dll

    Regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll

    Regsvr32 jscript.dll

Note: If you encounter errors while registering any of these files then skip that file and continue with the next one.

If the issue persists, let's move on to the steps below to verify Windows Update services and temporary folders.

Step 2 Verify the relevant Windows Update services.

    =========================================

    1. Click Start->Run, type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) in the open box and click OK.

    2. Double click the service "Automatic Updates".

    3. Click on the Log On tab, please ensure the option "Local System account" is selected and the option "Allow service to interact with desktop" is unchecked.

    4. Check if this service has been enabled on the listed Hardware Profile. If not, please click the Enable button to enable it.

    5. Click on the tab "General "; make sure the "Startup Type" is "Automatic" or "Manual". Then please click the button "Stop" under "Service Status" to stop the service.

    6. Then please click the button "Start" under "Service Status" to start the service.

    7. Please repeat the above steps with the other services:

    Background Intelligent Transfer Service

    Event Log

    Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

Note: Event log service is enabled on all of the hardware profiles; this service does not have an option to enable or disable on certain hardware profile.

If it still does not help, let's proceed to step 3.

Step 3 Reload the Update temporary folders.

    ===================================

One possible cause is that the temporary folder for Windows Update is containing corrupted files. Let's erase all the files there to get the system clean.

    1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window.

    Net stop WuAuServ

    2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.

    3. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to Sdold.

    4. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window.

    Net start WuAuServ

Please test the Windows Update website and let me know the result. If the issue persists, to clarify the issue and provide more accurate troubleshooting steps, please assist me in collecting the following information.

  4. Oct 2018 Update failed -- can't install/update apps, etc

Jan 2018 update failed to install

    Hello Michelle,

I downloaded KB4056892 from the Catalog and successfully installed it. The only anomaly that I now observe is, on my "Update History List"; there are now two KB4056892
    entries.

    The first listed entry reads:

    Security Update for Windows (KB4056892)

    Successfully installed on 1/19/2018

    The second listed entry reads:

    2018-01 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version1709 for x64 based Systems (KB4056892)

    Failed to install on 1/4/2018 - 0x80070643

NOTE: The ID numbers for the two updates are identical, however, the titles of the Updates vary significantly. The Update with the successfully installation status is the one that I manually downloaded and installed, I suppose that I should
simply ignore the "Failed To Install" entry. I'm confused.
