Windows 10: Oculus Rift now needs Windows 10 for minimum system requirements

Across the Oculus Platform—Rift, Touch, and our core system software—we’re continuously working to upgrade and advance the PC VR experience for everyone. Doing so requires taking full advantage of the latest technology.

That’s why, as of today, we’re updating our minimum and recommended spec OS to Windows 10 to power the full Rift experience. Windows 7 and 8.1 users are still supported for the Rift features they know and love today, but they may not be able to use many new and upcoming features and apps. We encourage everyone who isn’t already running Windows 10 to upgrade now to avoid missing out on what’s next.

What’s Changing?

Windows 10 is now the minimum and recommended operating system spec for Rift. With most active Rift owners (95%) running Windows 10, this ensures we’re focused on delivering the latest advancements to the highest number of people possible.

If you’re currently running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, we recommend that you update to Windows 10 now to take full advantage of Rift’s functionality, features, and growing content library.

If you’re not sure whether or not your current hardware and OS are up to speed, you can use our compatibility check tool to see if your computer meets our minimum or recommended system specs.

Why Now?

Microsoft has deprecated mainstream support for Windows 7 and 8.1, so a shift to Windows 10 ensures we’ll be able to deliver the best performance standards for Rift owners, while aligning with industry standards.

Updating to Windows 10 also helps your system prepare for essential—and exciting—advancements coming soon. Rift Core 2.0 is our upgraded system software, currently available via opt-in beta. With a redesigned Home experience, app and window multitasking in Dash, and Oculus Desktop’s mirror monitors, Rift Core 2.0 pushes resource-heavy function while still maintaining Rift’s high-end performance standards. Windows 10 is integral to supporting these features. When Rift Core 2.0 rolls out to everyone later this year, people below the new minimum and recommended spec OS will still have access, but with some limitations.

What If I Choose Not to Upgrade?

Rift owners whose PCs aren’t running Windows 10 may find their systems are incompatible with some new apps and games. You’ll still be able to get the same VR features and functions you have today, including things like responding to platform notifications, interacting with friends on the platform, managing your device, and running VR apps that don’t require Windows 10. You can still use Windows 7 and Windows 8 with most of Rift Core 2.0’s core functionality, but things like Oculus Desktop require Windows 10, as does the ability to run Dash as an overlay.

Get Prepared: Min and Rec Spec

To ensure you get all of the latest features and advancements for Rift, and to guard against incompatibility, we recommend your PC meet or exceed these system specifications. For questions and additional information, please contact Oculus Support. Remember, some developers may push the boundaries in the future, and certain experiences may require a system exceeding our minimum or recommended specifications. You should refer to the recommended specifications for the Rift experiences you intend to use.

Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition is Coming to Oculus Rift

In June, we shared that Xbox and Oculus were partnering to usher in a new era of virtual reality gaming and that we’d have more to share soon. That day has arrived, as we’re very excited to announce that Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition will support Oculus Rift and will be available for purchase in both the Windows Store and the Oculus Store this spring. Windows 10 is the best platform for playing games on the Oculus Rift, and it was clear that one of the biggest games on Windows 10 would be the perfect way to experience virtual reality.

The Oculus Rift will immerse you in a virtual reality Minecraft world in which you’ll be able to play Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition in Creative or Survival mode – in full 3D! How to stream Xbox One games to your Windows 10 PC with Oculus Rift

Today’s tip is all about helping you get started with Xbox One game streaming to your Windows 10 PC with Oculus Rift, which is now available for all Rift owners and provides new ways for you to get the most out of your gaming experiences on Xbox.

Starting today, Rift owners can now stream their Xbox One library to Rift with the new Xbox One Streaming to Oculus Rift app, including favorites like “Gears of War 4,” “Forza Horizon 3” and “Halo 5: Guardians,” the biggest sports games, indie darlings, Backward Compatible Xbox 360 games, and more titles coming in 2017. Thanks to game streaming technology between Xbox One and Windows 10, the greatest Xbox console exclusive games can now be played on Windows 10 PCs, and now on Oculus Rift. To get started, you need an Oculus Rift running on a Windows 10 PC as well as an Xbox One on the same network. Simply download the Xbox One Streaming to Oculus Rift app in the Oculus Store and fire it up. Once you load the app, you can select your Xbox One on the list. As soon as you’ve connected to your Xbox One, you’ll see a streaming image straight from your console.

Windows 10 + Oculus Rift = Virtual Reality Gaming Awesomeness

Oculus VR, a leader in virtual reality, shared some details on what fans can expect to see when the Oculus Rift launches in 2016 earlier today at event in San Francisco and Head of Xbox Phil Spencer joined their CEO on stage to discuss a new partnership with Microsoft.

Through this new partnership, we’re working with Oculus to make gaming with the Oculus Rift awesome thanks to Windows 10 and the Xbox One:

The Oculus Rift will work natively with Windows 10. Windows 10 will make it easy to set up, jump in, and have an incredible VR gaming experience. Made-for-VR games will leverage DirectX 12 to unleash the full capabilities of new Windows 10 graphics hardware for top performance and the fastest frame rates. Simply put, Windows 10 is the best platform for playing games on the Oculus Rift.

You can play Xbox One games on the Oculus Rift. We’ve already shared that you’ll be able to stream your Xbox One games to your Windows 10 PC or tablet. But we’re also bringing the same Xbox One streaming capability to the Oculus Rift too – a feature that’s only possible courtesy of Windows 10. You’ll be able to play your favorite Xbox One games like Halo, Forza, Sunset Overdrive and more right on the Oculus Rift’s VR screen.

Every Oculus Rift will include an Xbox One controller at launch. With the new Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows that we unveiled last week included, you can play games on the Rift using the Xbox One controller wirelessly right out of the box.
