    Odd hard drive behavior

I have one month old 1tb hybrid hard drive and yesterday I was experiencing issues with it.

It started to run slower than usual. Games wouldn't load as quickly and when I first booted into windows the desktop icons appeared as blank pieces of paper. Then when I opened windows explorer the quick access icons and hard drive icon were also blank pieces of paper. When I restarted windows explorer via task manager the missing icons were fixed but when I clicked on my primary drive it wouldn't load (said "working on it" and all the icons on the left side of the window were completely gone). Did multiple disk checks and came up with 0 errors.

Also cortana wouldn't start (couldn't type in the search box) and when I tried to open the start menu it would flash for a split second then close. Took a few tries to actually get it to open. This happened before but all I had to do was reinstall the Nvidia drivers then install them again to get cortana to work again.

After about two hours of uninstalling both the Intel and Nvidia drivers and numerous reboots and trying tons of commad prompt commands all of a sudden cortana started up again. Then I opened windows explorer and the missing icons were fixed. Then I clicked on my primary drive and waited for it to load and after about a minute it loaded and seemed to work fine. Did a reboot and everything loaded properly and nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

I'm wondering if my hard drive is failing and if I should replace it or if this is just a software issue with windows 10.

    :)

    N95 Odd Screen Behavior..

Hello Odd hard drive behavior :)

2 days ago, when I turned the N95 V20 on, the system booted as usual, a little while later the screen lights went off, which is normal since there was no activity.

I put the phone on my bed, and like 5 seconds later the screen lights (only the screen lights, not the keys)came on by itself, like I pressed on button or something.

Like 5 seconds after the lights come on, a SMS message appeared on screen.

Usually, when there is a new SMS message, the screen light comes on and immediately after the screen lights come on, the message appears on screen with the corresponding sound.

But in this case, there were 5 seconds or so delay...

Should I worry about this issue?

    ??

    Thank you.

    John

Good question, especially since you still have warranty on the harddrive.

You might want to check the S.M.A.R.T. data of the harddisk. It should give you information on whether there are problems with the harddrive.

I tried the built in windows s.m.a.r.t. check and crystaldiskinfo and both say the hard drive is fine. I'm assuming it was probably a hiccup or something.

I forgot to mention right after my computer fixed itself windows update found and installed an update that fixed issue with windows. Not sure if that has anything to do with what happened.

  6. Hi there,

Could be a Windows thing, but it's still a good idea to run the SSHD manufacturer extended test to check for bad sectors. And make sure you have an up to date backup of all your important data. This is the only way to make sure that your data is safe. Good luck.

JRHNBR, yesterday evening Microsoft released one new Windows Update. Generally, Windows Updates do not appear to fix a problem, just because this problem has just happened to you. I would say this was just a normal installation, which has nothing to do with your problem.

TechpumpkinWD is right. The manufacturer of your harddisk most likely has some kind of tool, which can read out the S.M.A.R.T. data. Often these tools can see more information than the default ones coming with WIndows or from a third party.

I mentioned the update because I read that people who experienced similar issueshad their problems fixed when they updated their PC.

My Hybrid Drive was acting up like this a few days ago, I had to replace my SATA cable. It starts with slight freezing, then a total lockup, then after I rebooted, the drive was NOT on the Sata Bus. So I replaced the cable quick, and it showed up, no further problems. I have to replace sata cables about once a year.

Only issue is that I'm using a laptop so replacing the data connector isn't an option.

  11. It's still possible to test the drive with the manufacturer toolthough. And it could as well continue working without furtherproblems. If however the issue appears again you could test the HDDin a different system.
