Windows 10: Office 2010 and Office 2016 CAN run concurrently (not outlook though)

Hi folks

No problem running things like EXCEL 2016 and EXCEL 2010 concurrently.






Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2016 both work (but one at a time)

so if transitioning to Office 2016 you don't need to uninstall Office 2010 first.

Note though if you do uninstall Office 2010 after installing office 2016 you'll have to install 2016 again as there's a missing .dll file when you start up applications.

However I'm happy for the moment to have both on this system --especially as there's some quirky happenings with outlook 2016 whereas everything is perfect in Outlook 2010.

Note also if you start an excel session say office 2010 and then another one excel 2016 the 2nd session is marked as workbook 2 etc.

one use for this also is to have office in 2 different languages so you don't need to switch each time you want to change languages --the sort of things I do there's no difference in functionality for me with Office 2010 or 2016 -- 2016 has more cloud and groupware / collaboration corporate sort of stuff which I can't be bothered with anyway. Skype works fine for meetings etc.

Office 2010 and Office 2016 on same machine --no probs and concurrent

I've read a whole slew of stuff saying you can't have both versions of Office on the same machine -- I don't seem to have any problems with concurrently running different versions - apart from OUTLOOK. You can have outlook 2010 and 2016 on same machine with same mail accounts, inboxes etc though.

I simply installed Office 2016 (from the MSDN server ISO) activated and the apps are fine

What you can't do though is have say OUTLOOK 2010 AND Outlook 2016 open at the same time but the other apps in the office suite work concurrently with different versions.

EXCEL etc can run concurrently as shown in the screenshot






You can see the top one is Office 2016 because it has the sign in and share logos at the top right hand side of screen. I also have different colour schemes for the two versions.

I quite like this as I can have say office in 2010 in Icelandic (or language of your choice) and the other version in say English or if you are on a client's site the language of the client --as I'm working a lot in Belgium (Iceland is EEA so no Brexit probs for you Brits !!!) I can have it in say French or Flemish (Dutch).

The Office 2016 install from the ISO did not ask or prompt for Office 2010 to be in-installed.

I don't know about the 1-click stuff from the store though - I installed mine from the iso.

Office 2016 Preview and Office 2010 concurrently.


Hi there

I think this comment is allowed - there is an NDA but I think this is OK. The latest update installs OFFICE 2016 just fine and works OK. Office 2010 is left untouched so you can run BOTH concurrently.

OUTLOOK 2016 though uses the same data file as Outlook 2010 so SEND from outlook 2010 hoses up with "Cant access Outlook data file".

However once you've sent the email with Outlook 2016 you can see it in the SENT folder of both Outlook 2010 and 2016 so using Outlook 2016 during the preview won't cause carnage to your existing office outlook.

So far very impressed -- FORGET OFFICE 2013 completely. 2016 is STREETS better and you can get rid of that hideous over white theme too. NDA so can't post image.

Note I'm using x-64 for both Office 2010 and 2016.

If you want to try the Links were open this morning -- this could have been an error because they might close again soon.


So far so good -- note some people get activation message unless they have Office 365 subscription --I don't have and didn't seem to get that message.

Am using Windows 10 x-64 Enterprise as the OS I'm testing this on --running on a REAL machine, build 9926.
