Windows 10: Office 2016 for Windows gets a big update on Insider rings

Microsoft has just released Office 2016 Build 10813.20004 for Insiders. The updated version of Office 2016 is out for Windows desktop and you can download it on any supported version of the operating system.

It seems to be a big update with a long list of new features and improvements. Microsoft released the update on August 17 and you can download it if you’re a part of the Office Insider program.

What’s new in Office 2016 Build 10813.20004

No more bouncing to your browser: No more bouncing to your browser
Links to OneDrive and SharePoint Online documents will open in desktop Office when you click them in your Office app. You have the option to update your preferences.
But if you open Office links from the web (e.g. SharePoint on the web, Outlook on the web, etc.), these document links will continue opening in the browser for context continuity.

Rename your OneDrive or SharePoint files: You can now rename your Word, Excel and PowerPoint files if they are stored in One Drive or SharePoint. In Word, Excel & PowerPoint, you can see this new Rename capability by clicking on the top-level app title bar.

Delete your OneDrive or SharePoint files from Word, Excel or PowerPoint: You can now delete your Word, Excel and PowerPoint files from the Most Recently Used (MRU). In Word, Excel and PowerPoint, you can see this new delete capability by right clicking on the file name from the backstage file list.

Bug fixes and improvements

Word: We fixed a crashing issue when saving to the cloud. We fixed an issue where Design Mode was toggled on by default.

Excel: We fixed the macro recording icon visibility on the status bar. We fixed an Excel crash when closing a workbook after changing SmartArt Quick styles via context menu. We improved the visibility of selected comments in the Comments pane.

PowerPoint: We fixed an issue that could cause a system beep upon opening certain files. We fixed a rendering issue with themes.

Outlook: We fixed an issue where Reply to encrypted emails was not working.

Access: We fixed a regression where users could not email reports. We fixed an issue where STSLIST.dll crashed IE due to buffer overrun on printf of version info.

Project: Various performance and stability fixes.

All Apps: We fixed an issue where the Save button was disabled when saving a document opened from email attachment (Word, Excel & PowerPoint).

It's here! Office Insider Fast for Office 2016 on Windows

Hi Insiders –

As you may have heard, the Office Insider program for Windows Desktop is now available in two levels—Office Insider Slow and Office Insider Fast.

So what does this mean to you?

If you’re already an Office Insider, you’re now automatically enrolled in the Slow level. You’ll continue to receive early builds of Office 2016 once or twice a month, just as you have in the past.

If you want even earlier access to new features, more frequently, you can opt into the new Fast level and receive weekly builds of Office 2016. The Fast level is a good fit for those who like to be first in line to try features and provide feedback, and who are comfortable using unsupported builds.

Note: Office Insider is designed for consumer customers who receive Office 2016 updates as part of an Office 365 Home, Personal, or University subscription. If you’re a commercial subscriber, it is possible to receive Fast builds, but you must follow these steps instead of the ones described below.

Already an Office Insider? Here’s how you can change from the Slow to Fast level:

Ensure that 16.0.7341.2021 is installed, which we released to Office Insiders last week.

In any Office 2016 app, click File > Account > Office Insider > Change Level.

Select Insider Fast as your level, agree to the terms of use, and then click OK.

Click Update Options > Update Now to install the Office Insider Fast build.

At this point, you should be on version 16.0.7329.1000. To check, click File > Account and look for the version information under the Office Updates heading. Don't worry if you see Version 1610 (Build 7329.1000) instead of 16.0.7329.1000. It's the same build. As an Office Insider on the Fast level, you're just getting a sneak peek at our new naming convention.

Not yet an Office Insider and want to opt into the Fast level?

You’ll need to join the Office Insider program first, so you can install the latest Office Insider Slow build, 16.0.7341.2021, which contains the new user interface options for opting into the Fast level. (These options are not yet available to our non-Insider audience, and this is currently the only way you can sign up to receive Fast builds.)

Join the Office Insider program for Windows Desktop.

On your My Account page, in the Version list, choose either Office Insider - 32-bit or Office Insider - 64-bit, and then click Install.

At this point, you should be on the Slow build, 16.0.7341.2021. To check, click File > Account and look for the version information under the Office Updates heading.

To opt into the Office Insider Fast level and install the latest Fast build, follow steps 2 through 4 in the procedure above.

After you have the Fast build installed, check out the Shared with Me feature, which makes it easy to find documents, spreadsheets, and presentations that others have shared with you from OneDrive, OneDrive for Business, or SharePoint Online.

What's the best way to report issues or leave feedback?

Feel free to use any of the following options.

In any Office 2016 app, click File > Feedback. If you run into an issue, let us know by clicking I Don't Like Something. To suggest new features or improvements to existing features, click I Have a Suggestion and leave feedback on the app’s UserVoice site, which is like a community suggestion box.

Note: If you don’t see the I Have a Suggestion button shown above, it’s coming soon. In the meantime, you can go directly to these UserVoice sites: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Access, and Visio.

Announcing September Insider Slow update for Office 2016 for Windows

Current channel - Version 1608 (Build 7341.2032)

Hi Insiders -

On September 21, 2016, we released the September feature update for Office 2016 to our Office Insider Slow audience. To get the update immediately, open any Office 2016 app and choose File > Account > Update Options > Update Now. After you update, you should see either 16.0.7369.2017 or Version 1609 (7369.2017).

What's new in this release?
New features this month:

Ink replay: To understand what’s behind the ink you see on a PowerPoint slide, click Draw > Ink Replay to rewind and replay the ink strokes. You can use this feature to follow a sequence of handwritten notes and drawings, review step-by-step instructions, or see the order in which somebody else marked up the slide. (Feature requires an Office 365 subscription)

Better recordings: In PowerPoint, you can add a Recording tab to the ribbon, create a presentation made up of recorded slides, screen recordings, and inserted video, and then share that recorded content to be viewed remotely on Docs.com. You can also embed quizzes to assist with remote learning and make your presentation more interactive, as well as change the ink color right from the palette in the recording pane. Accessibility built right in: In Outlook, we’ve improved keyboard and assistive technology experiences for reading email, scheduling meetings, and adding a signature.

New data transformations and connectivity enhancements: In Excel, add parameters to your queries, or create new queries from Merge or Append operations. You can also use the Web connector to preview web pages. (Feature requires an Office 365 subscription)
