Office 2016 has suddenly become Office 365. Is this normal?

Until recently I had Office 2010 installed on my laptop, but after serious software problems, the technician at the university department where I work replaced it with Office 2016.
Last night I added some additional language packs to Office, and then noticed when I started up Word and Outlook this morning that instead of seeing Word/Outlook - Office 2016 I now get Word/Outlook - Office 365. Is this 'update' normal? And am I going to have to pay every so often to maintain Office 365 (I read somewhere that it is not an upfront payment like Office 2016, but a type of subscription service).

    :)

  2. How to ugrade office 2007

Upgrading or having Office 2007 installed is not particularly critical. As long as your Office documents are intact, performing a new installation will preserve your files.

You will need to purchase license for Office 2016 or Office 365.

Office 2016 is known as the perpetual license, which is like Office 2007, you buy it once and it doesn't get feature updates, but its one time purchase.

Office 365 is the evergreen version of Office 2016 which gets features and improvements as soon as they become available. A major difference between Office 365 and 2016, 365 is only available as a subscription. Which means you have pay a monthly fee for
    it.

  3. How do I get Windows 10 Mail to work with bellsouth.net?

The Mail application has become a moot point as I have since purchased Office 365 and it contains Outlook 2016. The Outlook works just fine and I won't be using Mail.

    Thanks for the answers.

Thanks for the reply, Berton. The version originally installed on my laptop was Office 2016; it was under licence to the university I work for, and has been installed on various PCs in my department. I obviously paid nothing for it. I have just checked out Office 365 (thanks for the link), and it is in fact a subscription service. I didn't request an update, and was happy with Office 2016. As far as you know, is it possible to go back to the previous version?

Is there a problem with your Office 365? Have you tried opening an Office application while not connected to the Network and Internet? The only issue I've seen, on a client's computer, was he had to sign in at least once a month to keep it activated. Again, it may depend upon what was purchased, most companies and institutions will get the Enterprise pricing to cover a large number of computers.

AFAIK, Office 2016 and Office 365 run the same versions of the primary apps -- e.g. Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and so forth. Unless you absolutely must have a standalone executable, because Office 365 apps don't require an Internet connection to work offline, there's not much difference between the two. See this Support.Office article for more information about how, when and why such differences will indeed matter in the future: What's the difference between Office 365 and Office 2016?

Office 2016 has suddenly become Office 365. Is this normal?

Many thanks for your feedback, guys. No, I don't think there are any problems with Office 365, but as I mentioned earlier, I've only had it since this morning!
I do not have a personal Microsoft account, so it will be interesting to see what happens after a month. But precisely because I don't have an account, I can hardly be expected to sign in. I'll just have to assume that the university will handle the expenses!
