Windows 10: Office 365 - WORD "temp enviroment variable"

I need some help. Over the 6-8 weeks I have had, what I call a major issue with Word. I have 46 files in my Word folder and when I launch a file, edit it and try to save it I hear a "beep" and a message appears, " Word could not create work file. Check the "temp environment variable" The file I tried to edit doesn't save. I have called the support line, **** at least 6-7 times. I called two days ago and a support agent in South America didn't have the slightest idea what that meant. I called yesterday, thinking I could get another support agent here in the U.S. I was transferred to India. The support agent then transferred me to another agent and he also didn't know anything about this problem. He tried to get me to remove my Office 365 and reinstall. I didn't because this effort had been done on 4 other occasions. No change.


Does anyone out there in MS Word world really know how to "FIX" this problem? I did a search for this message that appears and back in 2018 there was a topic that mentioned the problem was in the Registry. There's no way under all the stars that I would ever attempt to touch that. I've read horrid stories on what could happen if you make a mistake.

Office 2013 Word: Word could not create the work file. Check the temp environment variable

Whenever I try to open or preview a document, I get an error message that reads:

Word could not create the work file. Check the temp environment variable

If I double-click the file it opens and it shows the error. Things I have tried:

1. Restarting
   
2. Removing Office 2013 using the MS removal tool, then reinstalling it
   
3. Making changes to the registry according to this SO solution.
   
4. Making changes to the registry according to this "TheWindowsClub" solution.

This is normally a Office Word error. Are you using Office Word? See here:

What I'd do is repair Office at Settings > Apps and Features > Microsoft Office > Modify > Repair. This solves most problems and is suggested in the thread by an Office MVP.

Office 365 activation error after big Win 10 update

We appreciate your response, Keith. We suggest that you update Office 365 and see if it'll make a difference. You can simply do it by opening any Office 365 applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Here are the steps on how to do so:

• Open Office app, then click on File.
• Look for Account, then click on Update.
• Once done, restart your computer.
