One contacts database for both iPhone and email?

My "contacts" database for email (Thunderbird/Gmail) contains hundreds of email addresses. My iPhone contacts list is something that has been constructed over the years by using the phone, and is different from my email contacts. Roughly 75% of the individuals are the same, and both databases need to be updated because of duplicates, outdated entries, etc.

Is there a way to construct one database that can be imported to both my phone, iPad, and desktop computer that will serve for phone numbers and email addresses? I also use my phone for hands free calls in my car with voice recognition, if that makes a difference.

I'm pretty good with databases and spreadsheets, and would like to make a CSV file that I could edit and save to my desktop and mobile devices.

Thanks for your comments and help.

  2. Contacts List

The filter system displays the contacts in the database you select

Those contacts IF THEY ARE LINKED ie appearing in more than one database are 'brought along' as they per your request are LINKED.

LINKING shortens the database but you STILL have to update linked contacts separately

If you want those "private contact details" NOT to appear as say you predominantly use the filter,
YOU HAVE TO UNLINK THE CONTACT.

Those contacts who are now unlinked will appear twice if you turn off filter (i.e. select BOTH databases)

The correction to the problem is LINKING, you will operate an out of sync database by turning off syncing as that is what you use to reflect changes.

Two separate databases when you link that link is not "broken" by filtration only unlinking does that, which is what is was before 2 separate databases.
