Windows 10: OneDrive Files stuck on sync pending

OneDrive files stuck on "sync pending" The help files suggest update KB4550945 but where do you get that and can you download and install it without problems?

Files not syncing to OneDrive

OneDrive Placeholders are coming back, now called On-Demand Sync




"At Ignite 2016, Microsoft has just announced that it is bringing Placeholders back to OneDrive on Windows 10. Now, they are not called Placeholders anymore — Microsoft is renaming the feature to “On-Demand Sync” which makes a lot more sense than “Placeholders”.

The company demoed this feature at Microsoft Ignite today, and it works just like it used to previously. As you can see in the screenshot above, the files stored in OneDrive weighed in around 9GB, but the actual size on disk was only around 3MB which is really neat. Of course, this feature isn’t anything new as it was available back in the Windows 8 days. However, Microsoft removed the feature with Windows 10, and after lots of waiting, they are finally coming back.

In case you are not familiar with OneDrive Placeholders, it’s a pretty neat feature which lets you see all of your OneDrive files on your computer — but they are not actually downloaded on your PC. When you open them, OneDrive will download the files on-demand, saving your local space which is really useful, especially if you have a PC that doesn’t have a lot of storage.

While Microsoft didn’t announce when exactly On-Demand Sync will be available to OneDrive users, we suspect it will be available with Windows 10 Redstone 2 — which is expected to arrive early next year. "

Windows 10 Onedrive stuck/hung syncing files to PC

In my case, on Windows 10 pro -

Out of 5 folders inside my OneDrive, all 5 were syncing correctly to my laptop.

My laptop was upgraded from Win 8.1 to Win 10.

On my desktop however, which was upgraded from Windows 7 to Win10, only 3 of the 5 folders would sync.

The 3 folders that synced properly had the green checkmark icon on them. The 2 that were stuck had the little blue sync arrows on them. For days. The OneDrive icon would say 529k of 529k, 1 file remaining.

The fix in my case was the permission (the ACL, or Access Control List) of the subfolder in my OneDrive.

You see, on the main OneDrive folder, when I went to the security tab, there was an entry for 'Authenticated Users' with a permission level of 'Modify'.

The 3 folders which were syncing properly also had this entry. The 2 which were stuck, did not have this entry.

I added Authenticated users manually, and the sync immediately started progressing for both folders.
