Thanks @EdTittel *Smile

Most difficult thing in using a foreign language is to translate jokes, anecdotes, idioms and sayings (not to mention crosswords...).

I'm always keen to better my English, each "native" idiom, a way to say something I learn helps!

  2. @Kari that reply was specifically directed at @HippsieGypsie however I am willing to help anyone out, be it publicly or privately; that's why we have the message option. Not many people offer to sit down and talk to someone privately about their problems, many would just tell them to push off and fix it themselves.

P.S. I have an unsolved post, how do I mark it as solved with the iOS app?
I'm using the iOS app to write this reply
.

First, Hippsie is a senior member and a very advanced and knowledgeable user who has taught me and other members a lot.

Second, you are totally, profoundly missing my point. You are also misunderstanding the purpose of the messaging system of these forums.

The idea of this site, or any other tech site is not to bring together one OP with an issue and another person who then privately, hidden from other users helps the OP to resolve his / her issue. For that we have phone and email and other channels. The messaging system is absolutely not intended for the purpose you think it is, it is not and has never been meant to be used in private troubleshooting and issue resolving hidden from public areas.

Quite the contrary, the idea is to bring together people needing assistance and those able to assist. Publicly. A resolved issue when resolved in general areas of these forums can and will benefit a number of other users whereas an issue resolved in private correspondence remains private and solution does not help any other users. I see offering private assistance using our messaging system as being against the most important principle of sites like this: resolving issues together.

Yes, I do that if and when I get a PM from another member here on Ten Forums asking private help. Instead of even thinking about replying to that PM with a possible fix or solution, I will ask him / her to start a new thread and post about the issue. Again, I repeat, to benefit other users, other members and guests alike.

I reveal you a secret: I am quite computer smart (using your words), too. Ask any friend of mine, real or virtual, and you'll find out I am constantly assisting them on Skype, Twitter direct messaging, phone, email and so on. But, for me to even suggest a forums friend / fellow member here that instead of posting about an issue just PM me and we do it privately would be (in my opinion) so clearly against every principle of being a member on a site like this, being part of the community, that I would never do it. Notice that it does not mean that I am not willing to help in those rare occasions I can.

Yes, several of our members have added me to Skype or know my phone and / or email and if they contact me outside these forums as sometimes happens, I will not deny my help if I feel I can assist. On several occasions I've found the issue so interesting that I have asked them to post about it here, that the issue and its possible solution would benefit other users, too. But here, all issues and all assistance is and should always be public.

In all threads started by you, on every page, there's this button at bottom of the page just above "Quick Reply":

Thanks for your offer, but I decline for few reasons.

As Kari mentioned, I think this is a "we" community. Solutions are reached most times by many members that post, so therefore "we" all learn by it or at times reminded of the solution. I feel they should all be made public so even the non-member can learn as well.

I simply don't have time to answer PMs along with the many other threads I follow. If anyone PMs me I will suggest that the sender/user start a thread and I try to follow that thread.

Why with all the scamming and hacking going on, I definitely won't give out my email address to someone I don't know. That runs along the lines that "we are our best AV". I suggest not to solicit that way in threads here, because most will become suspicious. Not accusing that you did that on purpose, but because you are fairly new here it is suspicious none the less.

Welcome to the forum and enjoy your stay. I'm sure with your ambition you'll be a Guru in no time. *Smile

  5. @Kari I see your point, communicating privately about a problem will isolate other members from the community that might be having the same problem. I apologise for my mistakes in understanding.

About Hippsie's comment about scammers and hacking, @HippsieGypsie I'll share a secret with you (from Tipsy to Hippsie) last month I suffered a rather scary malware attack that could have had resulted in disastrous consequences had I not acted quickly and used Hitman Pro to find and defeat the malware. I know what that type of thing feels like. I would never try to scam or hack anyone; I'm not that type of guy. But, if you don't want to give out your email address, that's 100% fine. I apologise to you, Hippsie.

Let's all help fight computer problems together, as a community, as one!
    Sincerely
    Gypsy

P.S. May I inform you that I am completely blind, so including images in replies or posts won't work as I won't be able to see the image.

A little late in posting, for I've been sick with the flu these past couple of days. Haven't been on much.

Apology accepted, but really no need to. We all had to learn the ropes.

I commend you for using and learning computers while being handicapped. In reading your posts thus far, it seems you are very knowledgeable with them for a young man your age. As I stated before; You'll be a guru here in no time. Keep up the good work! *Thumbs

  7. Get well soon, Hippsie! Thanks for the kind words, not many people understand what it's like to have no eyesight and I'm often bullied and criticised

I'm feeling better, thanks. You'll do fine and are welcomed here. Administration won't put up with such criticism. Keep on keeping on.
