Windows 10: OneDrive Message Center Updates October 1st to October 15th

Hello everyone,

With the team settling back in post-Ignite, we’ve got some great updates to share that will be landing in your organization soon! This month, we are rolling out updates to allow for the silent implementation of Known Folder Move and we are adding the activity column to OneDrive on the web! We also want to remind everyone about the upcoming TLS changes we’ve mentioned on this blog previously!

Known Folder Move
Available Now

A few months ago, we announced the availability of the Know Folder Move feature for Windows and OneDrive. It has been truly amazing to see the enthusiasm and excitement around the new capabilities that we announced at Ignite. We are excited to announce that silent deployment of Known Folder Move is now available in production builds of OneDrive, making it even easier to migrate content from your user’s local drive to the cloud. The team is continuing to invest in and improve the Known Folder Move feature and if there are additional capabilities you would like to see, we encourage you to submit your asks at the OneDrive UserVoice. Most notably, we know that Mac users are interested in Known Folder Move as well and we are continuing to investigate solutions on how to integrate KFM with the macOS platform. We look forward to sharing our future plans around Mac as we make progress.

Activity
Begins rolling out to customers in late October

We are adding a new column to the standard views on the OneDrive website to surface the most valuable activity directly to users. Once available, this column will help users easily see which files have been active by highlighting events like comments, mentions and more. This is a great way for users to understand what content they should check out and may be important to getting their work done. The activity column will begin rolling out in October.

Mandatory use of TLS 1.2 in Office 365

In support of our promise to provide best-in-class encryption to our customers, we are planning to discontinue support for Transport Layer Security (TLS) versions 1.0 and 1.1 soon in Microsoft Office 365. We understand that the security of your data is important, and we are committed to transparency about changes that could affect your use of the service. The Microsoft TLS 1.0 implementation has no known security vulnerabilities. But because of the potential for future protocol downgrade attacks and other TLS vulnerabilities, we are discontinuing support for the use of TLS 1.0 and 1.1 in Office 365. Click here to learn more.

OneDrive Message Center Updates July 1st-15th

We are excited to announce three new updates coming to the OneDrive desktop client this month. These features will help users feel more in control, empowered to provide feedback, and better educated about what’s happening with their files.

Pause OneDrive sync when Battery Saver is on

Begins rolling out to customers in July 2018

To help conserve battery life on Windows devices, we are making improvements to the OneDrive desktop client to automatically pause sync whenever the device switches to “battery saver” mode.

As soon as we detect that a device enters “battery saver mode” we will automatically pause syncing and show a Windows toast notification informing you of why the desktop client was paused. Once we detect that the device is no longer in “battery saver” mode, OneDrive will auto-resume.

We will also give you the option to ‘Sync anyway’, which will un-pause sync and will respect your selection while OneDrive is running (until you sign-out or exit OneDrive or shut down your device) even if the devices switches to/from “battery saver” mode.

In addition to the toast, OneDrive Activity Center will inform you that OneDrive is paused because the device is in “battery saver” mode

Send Feedback

Begins rolling out to customers in July 2018

You are now able to send positive or negative feedback to us as well as suggest new ideas by clicking on “Send Feedback” under OneDrive desktop client settings/preferences menu from any device running the OneDrive desktop client.

You can send us feedback on what we are doing right or what we need to improve on and address, as well as suggest a new idea by clicking on either “I like something”, “I don’t like something”, or “I have a suggestion”. If you have a suggestion or an idea, clicking on “I have a suggestion” will take you to our UserVoice site where you can submit a new idea or upvote an existing one. If your organization has “Report a problem” disabled, the same policy will also disable “Send feedback”.

We’ve modernized the OneDrive Activity Center to improve ease of use and understanding. The Activity Center is your go-to place for seeing the status of the OneDrive desktop client or to customize your experience. This experience will begin rolling out to customers in late July

OneDrive Message Center Updates September 15th to September 30th

Coming off a great Ignite week, here are the latest updates to the OneDrive service this month! If you want to see the full list of announcements, head over to the official Ignite post to learn more! This month we’re releasing Mac Files On-Demand, Dark Mode for OneDrive on Mac, Files On-Demand and Storage Sense, and link open receipts for sharing links. Continue reading for more details!

Mac Files On-Demand

Begins rolling out to customers now

Releasing to Office Insiders today, Files On-Demand for Mac makes it easy to have access to all your files, but only have files you need to be stored locally on the device which reduces the amount of storage space consumed. You don‘t have to change the way you work, because all your files can be seen in Finder and work just like every other file on your device. Files On-Demand is available to consumer and commercial OneDrive customers, and works across all your personal, work, and shared files in Office 365. Visit our support page to learn how to enable this. Files On-Demand for Mac will be publicly available in the coming months.

Dark Mode support for Mac

Begins rolling out to customers now

Dark Mode is a dramatic new look that helps you focus on your work in MacOS Mojave. Dark Mode works with built-in apps that come with the Mac and is now fully supported in OneDrive for Mac. When Dark Mode is enabled, OneDrive will switch to a new gorgeous dark theme across all of the UI (such as Finder Overlays, and the OneDrive Activity Center,) to ensure a cohesive experience.

Files On-Demand and Storage Sense Integration

Begins rolling out to customers now

With Windows 10 October 2018 update Windows Storage Sense now has the capability to automatically free up disk space by making older, unused, locally available OneDrive files be available online-only. Your files will still be safe in OneDrive and represented as placeholders on your device. Your online-only files will still be visible on your device. When connected to the internet, you’ll be able to use online-only files just like any other file. You can learn more about this new functionality here.

Link Open Receipts

Begins rolling out to customers this month

When you share a file in the OneDrive web experience using the “Quick Send” capability, you will have peace of mind knowing when someone engages with your file for the first time. OneDrive will send you a Link Open receipt to notify you that your link was clicked on. Link Open receipts will begin rolling out in early October.
