Thanks for all your answers. I think it's time I try the preview for myself. Joining the insider program required way less steps than I had imagined. Downloading ISO now.

Just finished installing a VM. Holding shift + left click (or right click) does not give me the "pin to start list" option, only "pin to start". I see it if I do it on something in windows explorer e.g. "This PC" on the desktop, but even if I choose pin to start list it does not show up there. Are y'all certain you're running the latest build? I'm on 9926.

    I can't upload a snip for some reason so I can't illustrate.

You can't do it on the Default 'Continuum' Menu, (or what is currently being referred to as the 'Expandable' Menu); you'll need to use Shawn's tweak to enable all three Menu Interfaces:

    https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2...text-menu.html

then try it on the 'Resizable Menu' UI, then went you return to the Default Menu UI, it should be there.

(It might not work properly for every item, but then again, there's a lot of stuff that's not working properly in this Build!)

Only "pin to start" (as a tile) and not "pin to start menu"?

There is no left hand pane in the default start menu, is there ?

I forget, I changed it as soon as I installed, I hate the start screen *Sad the start menu does everything it can do.

    Yes I`m running 9926

Do you know how to upload a snip ? What exactly is the issue with that ?

Well, it is somewhat inconsistent. Sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. I have not figured it out yet why it works with certain shortcuts and with others it does not. Guess that's just why it is called a TP *Wink

As I said in the first post I'm used to the start screen so the tweak with bat files and registry change is not worth the effort. It's not a dealbreaker.

Not sure why I can't upload a snip, might be my js settings in Firefox.

If this is the start menu they'll go for I think I'll stick to the start screen even on my desktop.

What icon can`t you get pinned to the start list ?

Try IE or Chrome to upload snips, no issues there.

Only "pin to start" (as a tile) and not "pin to start menu"?

You need to exceed a certain number of posts before you can upload attachments, no?

I can't pin any icons to the start list, I can only pin them as resizable tiles to the right side. Shift + right click does not give me the option "pin to start list" within the start menu. See snip below, that's shift+right click on Notepad, sorry for the colors. I do get the option when I shift-right-click an icon in Windows Explorer, but they still don't show in the left list. I only have

    Places
    File Explorer
    Documents
    Settings

And at the bottom I have
    Recently added:

If I have to make registry tweaks to make the non continuum start menu go away I might as well install Classic Shell.

It does not work like this. You have to shift + right click the corresponding exe file or a shortcut in Windows Explorer to get the "pin to start lis" option. But be aware that even though you can choose to pin a certain program to the start list there is no guarantee that it actually works. On my system it does not work for most programs, i've only been able to add a handful of them. The only thing that does work ist "pin to start" which adds them to thw right side of the sart menu as a tile.

Seriously,I hope this is a bug. Because a start menu that does not let you add your own programs is worthless. If I'm forced to use tiles I will be better off using the start screen.

Only "pin to start" (as a tile) and not "pin to start menu"?

I agree, this version of the start menu is worse than the original start screen in windows 8.1 update 1 (which I've grown to like, but don't tell anyone). When they gave us the option to resize tiles to neat little squares it gave it a whole new dimension. But in this cramped new start menu all the shortcut-tiles I want present wont fit and that is utterly stupid. So then I'd rather stick with the full screen alternative. I refuse to pin stuff to the taskbar because that looks messy like an irl desk filled to the brim, kind of like OSX.

Another fun note is that I had to install windows 7 on a NUC and I actually installed Classic shell to make the start menu look less windows 7-ish because Aero... ugh.

Great, I've just managed to create a shortcut for "this pc" which is as near to the old "computer" as W10 will ever get, actually better in fact. I have this in W8.1 also.

Looks like you didn`t switch to the start menu yet.

Use Brink`s tutorial to enable the Windows 8 Start menu.
