Opening Apps on Windows 10, Version 1809 Taskbar

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 Pro, Version 1809, Build 17763.55 on 2 of my home computers and am experiencing the following problem with one computer (an HP Laptop 8540w) but not the other (a Dell Inspiron I660). When I left click on the HP computer's Windows 10 taskbar app, I receive the following message: "This file does not have an app associated with it for performing this action. Please install an app or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Apps Settings page." However, when I left click on the taskbar app, a drop-down menu appears with several options including a prompt that permits me to open the app. This only occurs with the apps associated with my personal software that I've added to the taskbar, not with Start, MS Edge, Microsoft Store, or other MS apps on the taskbar. It's also not a problem with my desktop apps.

The situation does not exist with the Dell computer in that a left click on all taskbar apps opens them and a right click results in a drop-down menu appearing the same as it does on the HP computer. I suspect that the problem is a registry issue but I don't have the slightest idea how to resolve it.

    Can anyone help?

    :)

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

    WMP for version 1809...

My Windows 10 N, version 1803 had used Windows Media Player via installing it from the "Windows_MediaFeaturePack_x64_1803.msu" file.

Updating to 1809 removed the WMP and no longer available in the apps list:

There's an updated version listed at:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...ows-n-editions

But clicking on the link and looking for the 1809 in the drop down list of versions does not show the media feature pack available for download for 1809; instead it shows version 1709 and 1803.

Does anyone have a direct link to WMP for Windows 10 N, version 1809?

    TIA...

Mail app will not open on 10041.

    Hello Adam,

This is the suggested solution below if you haven't already tried it. Opening Apps on Windows 10, Version 1809 Taskbar :)

In this Windows 10 build 10041, the Mail, Calendar, and People apps may be broken due to a licensing issue with the Store Beta. To get these apps working again, you need to follow these steps:

    • Open powershell as administrator
    • Run the command Get-appxprovisionedpackage –online | where-object {$_.packagename –like “*windowscommunicationsapps*”} | remove-appxprovisionedpackage –online
    • Re-install Mail, People and Calendar from the Store (green tile)
