Windows 10: OpenSSH Server won't install and is missing from Manage Optional Features

I'm pretty confused.

Windows 10 build 18363.


First off, Manage Optional Features had "OpenSSH client" and "OpenSSH server" available like 2 weeks ago. Same system. Then I tried installing them, with Manage Optional Features. Both installs failed and died.


Now today I went back to try and install them and BOTH were missing from Manage Optional Features.



I tried installing them today from PS:

Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name OpenSSH.Client~~~~0.0.1.0

Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name OpenSSH.Server~~~~0.0.1.0


So get this. This morning, they both reported "Online".

But then run:



PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> Get-WindowsCapability -Online ? Name -like 'OpenSSH*'

Name : OpenSSH.Client~~~~0.0.1.0

State : Installed

Name : OpenSSH.Server~~~~0.0.1.0

State : NotPresent


OK..


Let's see C:\Windows\System32\OpenSSH:

Let's open my Optional features now and click "See optional feature history":

1. Settings window opens... Header text "See optional feature history", sub "Last 7 days". It's thinking... thinking..... and thinking..... 5 minutes.

2. "No feature history"




What can I do next?

many thanks for the advice!
I have removed the features openssh-server and opeenssh-client.
I have erased C:\Windows\System32\OpenSSH
I have reinstalled the optional-feature openssh-server.
I press ctrl+alt-delete, and go to Task-Manager, services.
I press start on sshd.
sshd does NOT start (see attached, my Windows is German)
\Any idea of what I might be missing?

try and browse to the openssh keygen.exe file and double click --this should generate a key for you.





look at the config file too --open with notepad.

reboot the Windows machine and then have another go at starting SSHD service -- you might also need to ensure that your user can start services --might need mucking around with secpol --this is an area of Windows though I have almost ZERO experience in.

I added to my previous post to show how to do it via Putty and SSH (from the Linux Host) as well.

Both ssh-agent and SSHD services need to be running (my Windows is in icelandic but it shows services running I set to manual for testing).

No Features to Install Under Optional Features?

I have exactly same problem. Trying to install OpenSSH Client (beta) but my "Optional features" list in empty.
