    Optional Update KB4497165

    Hello Forum,

    My HP laptop is running Win 10 Pro x64 version 10.0.18363 build 18363 with Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10510U CPU @ 1.80GHz, 2304 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)

My Internet Security program, ESET Smart Security, gives an indication when Win 10 updates are available. Usually, it's just Windows Defender definition updates, but for the last week, it's also indicated that optional update, KB4497165, 2020-01 Update for Windows 10 Version 1909 for x64-based Systems is available.

However, when I run System update, and check for updates, only the Windows Defender updates are presented, downloaded and installed. The indications from ESET Smart Security are cleared for the moment, and my Win 10 system is apparently up to date.

When the next Windows Defender update is available, the process repeats and apparently the optional update is never presented for download.

    KB4497165: Intel microcode updates

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...rocode-updates

From the link above, it appears that this microcode update applies to specific processors or cpu models.

My HP laptop has a 10th Gen i7 cpu, Ice Lake.

I don't see this cpu listed on the link above, and that may be the reason why Windows Update doesn't present this optional update.

    Is this a problem?

I recall a previous optional update was presented in a similar manner several times before it was ultimately presented, downloaded and installed.

Has anyone else experienced this optional update issue?

I know optional updates are relatively new for Win 10. I've only reluctantly upgraded to Win 10 with the purchase of a new HP laptop.

I'm still running Win 7 on my desktop.

    Regards.

    :)

    Optional Update KB4497165

you probably should just skip or hide the KB4497165 update with wushowhide.diagcab on the HP laptop, tjg79

"Ice Lake" is not listed in MS support article 4497165 so you most likely do not need to install that update

    Optional Update KB4497165

There's nothing to hide on the OS. The optional update doesn't appear when I check for updates.

It's only visible via my Internet Security software ESET Smart Security which gives an indication that updates are available. And, indicates which updates it sees.

I suspect it doesn't appear in Windows Update, because the microcode update doesn't apply to my 10th gen i7 processor.

Although, as I pointed out previously, I did have a similar episode with another optional update, that didn't appear for several weeks in the OS, and that did eventually appear and was installed. I was expecting a similar resolution with this update, but it hasn't happened yet.
