Windows 10: Original windows 10 disc

Got the DVD.

So if windows should stop working or my usb flash drive breaks, I can use the DVD to wipe my SSD and install windows again, and then use aomei to get my computer working.

Yes, it works.

It's a bit annoying that you have to select between various versions and builds when installing windows, but it works.

For $10 I'm not complaining.

 

If your having to select a specific Build its not an Original Microsoft DVD. Not as far as I know anyway. None of my MSDN ISO's are like that. I think you already know that but figured I'd mention it anyway. It sounds like its something somebody built themselves, which means it may have some hidden secrets buried in there some place.

The problem is that you don't know what viruses or spyware the complete stranger that made the DVD might have inserted into it. You have know idea where this complete EBay stranger even obtained the ISO file from to make the DVD with. They might have used an ISO file that someone before them tampered with.

 

Exactly, I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole. It will be outdated anyway in a couple of weeks when the Spring Update drops.

In summary
Creating USB install media has been recommended so that the current version of Windows 10 that matches your computer is available.
You can also create a USB Recovery drive that includes the system files of your computer.
Creating system image backups has also been recommended.
It's unlikely all three recommendations are likely to break.

It might sound time consuming but what's important you are in control of the most recent versions especially if completed after a new feature update and it's known to run as expected.

 

That's the beauty of the MCT. You can use it to make the USB drive AND the .iso. Anytime there is a new build, I update my flash drive and download the .iso to store on my NAS.

 

For clarity, you have to redownload mct each build upgrade as it is version specific. It would be more obvious if they gave a name to each one eg instead of mediacreationtool.exe, it was named (say) mediacreationtool1709.exe.

 

Would be nice if the name contained the build. I believe it shows in the properties of the .exe file, too.

 

Starting with the MCT for 1703, it won't let you upgrade or build the media if there's a newer version available. Instead it tells you to download the latest MCT and gives you a link to do so.
