Windows 10: Outlook and Metered Connection?

Hello. I've only posted here a few times, but I'm sure grateful for this Forum, lots of helpful tips and fixes! And I've been helped when I needed it.

I'm using Win 10 Pro, with the 20H2 update. I am current with updates as of 2/9/2021. I have a satellite Internet connection with HughesNet. Lately I have been running out of my data allowance (which resets once a month) 8-10 days before that reset.

Yesterday, wanting to see about monitoring and limiting my Internet data usage, I set my ethernet connection to the modem to a metered connection. I did not open Outlook (2016) after that. This morning when I opened Outlook, I got a message about Outlook detecting a metered connection, with a box to click to ignore it. I clicked there, but Outlook still would not download my email.

So I turned the 'metered connection' feature off. Outlook now works as it did before.

In case it might be a factor, I also installed AdBlock on my two browsers just after setting up the metered connection. Again trying to limit data downloads. I did not uninstall AdBlock.

My question is: Can I use a metered connection and Outlook at the same time? Or is there any reason to? I have modem software that allows me to monitor my usage.

Outlook on metered connection

Hi zplugger, I've unsuccessfully searched high and low for this same solution ages ago and had a quick look today. Still no luck, only endless suggestions to change the metered connection setting to be not metered. duh

I have a wireless internet connection and truly have no appreciation for M$ suddenly deciding I must have this 4 GB update immediately. All my connections are set as metered.

I have noticed that some recent changes do allow me to use Gmail (without authentication type grief) on Outlook 365 with a metered connection. This did not work last year.

I'll see if I can find any new solutions when I get time and report back. *Smile

 

Outlook on metered connection

My computer is set up for a metered connection because of data limits. When I open outlook to check me mail I get a Metered Network warning (Connect Anyways). Can I have the computer set to metered connection and change something in the registry to let outlook run like its not on a metered connection? So no more warnings.

Thanks for that suggestion Denis but that didn't work for my pc. The file mapisvc.inf was located elsewhere and after renaming to mapisvc.inf.bak and restart Outlook followed by a reboot didn't bring any joy.

That is certainly the type of solution I'm looking for though. Somewhere somehow Outlook must poll the current connection DefaultMediaCost and determine it's set to metered (2).
