Windows 10: Outlook mobile for iOS and Android is rolling out Dark Mode

Today we are starting to roll out dark mode in Outlook for iOS and Android. For added comfort or when a bright screen may not be appropriate, we’re bringing people the choice and flexibility to adapt their experience with a simple and powerful Microsoft 365 Dark Theme experience.

Outlook for Android and iOS

Adapting to work life flow, Outlook focuses its design on the context of where people want to use Dark Mode. When asked, people found the experience comfortable and aesthetically pleasing while keeping their email and calendar content crisp and clear. This way, Outlook helps you stay connected and organized so you can get things done wherever you are such as dimly lit living rooms, home offices or airplanes.

This experience is in keeping with other modern apps that aim to ease viewing and reduce eye strain. And, to help optimize battery life, once iOS and Android devices support dark themes*, Outlook plans to automatically switch to Dark Mode based on their device settings in addition to Outlook in-app options.

It’ll take several weeks to complete the full roll out of Dark Mode in Outlook for iOS or Android worldwide. New Outlook mobile design for iOS and Android

Today, we’re rolling out exciting updates to Outlook for iOS with recognizable avatars and optimized swipe and scroll usability that reflects the continuation of our design-driven journey and helps you connect, organize, and get things done. We’ve been meticulously tailoring both Outlook for iOS and Android, making it faster than ever to achieve your goals and maximize your time while on the go.

Design is becoming the heart and soul of Office, something reflected in the Office 365 user experience updates announced this summer and the new icons we revealed last week. Outlook mobile will be among the first app to adopt its new icon, and, much like the entire Office 365 suite, design thinking and craftsmanship have been driving Outlook mobile forward. It’s a key reason why we’ve exceeded more than 100 million iOS and Android devices and our app store ratings are consistently above 4.5.

Great mobile experiences don’t just shrink desktop designs, they rethink the process by understanding mobile’s unique design opportunities and constraints. Unlike a desktop, our phones live with us in our pockets and purses. This proximity and immediacy create the need for more personal, efficient, and even playful experiences that require a mobile-first approach.

Mobile productivity increasingly happens through a series of micro-tasks that take place in seconds, not minutes. This makes it vital to design experiences with less typing and taps, where your attention is brought to what matters most, and where key context is always available at a glance.

Quality and delightful craftsmanship

Great experiences are felt as much as they are seen. When we craft them, we pay attention to the details that make Outlook mobile feel faster.

With the new design in Outlook for iOS, we’re introducing new sensory feedback to create a resonant experience with the device cradled in your hand. When you swipe right or left on an email, subtle changes in color, shape, and iconography unfold. The corners of the message transform from hard-edged to soft and round, metaphorically pulling that item away from the message list and sending it where you want it to go—with haptic feedback.

Delight is brought to you through moments that happen within milliseconds, like the new animated calendar icon that fans forward or backward as you scroll through your agenda, or the instant insight provided in your inbox by signaling a potential meeting conflict. This craftsmanship makes Outlook mobile a gratifying, powerful experience as you quickly move on with your day.

Fast and focused

The first thing most will notice as we roll out the Outlook for iOS changes over the next few weeks is the bold color that creates a more vibrant experience. We recognize that people use many apps on their devices and quickly switch between apps to complete tasks.

A strong app header with bold color and typography helps you easily find your way to Outlook while rapidly switching between monochromatic apps to quickly complete your task and get back to what matters. The experience is consistent across mobile email, search, and calendar; and for those who use Outlook on a large screen, the blue header connects you to your familiar inbox and calendar no matter which Outlook you use.

As a native app, we embrace the native font and use of typography, so Outlook feels perfectly at home on your device of choice. The bolder, larger iOS typography, however, shouldn’t compromise the experience, which is why as you scroll on your iPhone and iPad, the size of the header is dynamically reduced to maximize your message list to view and find what you’re looking for.

Contextually relevant

With the new iOS refresh, we improved the usability of more core experiences. The Focused Inbox toggle and message list filtering experience now orientate you to your content and accounts in a way that provides clarity and confidence.

If you’re a single account user, the app is personalized with your avatar. If you have multiple accounts and calendars added to the app, new account icon cues help you easily switch between them. Bright, bold avatars are also added to your contacts, so you’ll instantly recognize senders in the message, top contacts in search, and attendees in meeting invites.

In addition, did you know you can schedule an event when you know your team’s availability without typing a single letter? When designing the scheduling experience in Outlook mobile, we brought forward all people, dates, and place elements required into context so you could simply slide the options around the calendar to quickly find the time and place that works, no typing required. Through iterations on both iOS and Android, Outlook mobile delivers a powerful experience that helps you achieve your goals and save you time—so you can get back to what matters in your day.

Announcing Actionable Messages in Outlook Mobile for iOS and Android

Today, we are announcing the support of Actionable Messages in Outlook for iOS and Android to further help customers get things done quickly on the go. When you receive an email that has an option to take action, such as approving a timesheet, granting system access or quickly answering a survey, you can act on it right inside the email without leaving your inbox and switching apps.

Microsoft is working with the developer community to integrate the tools, tasks and experiences of leading applications in a way that brings the work you would normally do in other apps right to your email. Using Actionable Messages with Adaptive Cards, developers can deliver messages in Outlook so customers can stay in context of what they doing and quickly take action. Outlook for Windows and Outlook on the web already support Actionable Messages and rolling out over the next few months, customers will be able to take action with Outlook for iOS and Android on a mobile device.

Office 365 Groups: Actionable Message to approve adding members to groups in Outlook mobile

The Microsoft partners who are actively developing Actionable Messages with Adaptive Cards include SurveyMonkey, Freshworks, ServiceNow and Sage. If your company uses these business applications, you may soon see their new Actionable Messages appear in Outlook on your mobile device as well as the other supported platforms.

SurveyMonkey: Actionable Message professional development survey in Outlook mobile

If you are a developer: Partners who develop Actionable Messages with Adaptive Cards will be able reach their target users wherever they are and on their device of choice. The supported platforms are Outlook on the web, Outlook for Windows and Outlook for iOS for customers using the Microsoft sync technology. Outlook for Android will support Actionable Messages in the coming weeks and Outlook for Mac later this summer. Developers should now pivot to design Actionable Messages with Adaptive Cards for mobile first which will scale well to larger screens.

For our business customers: We’re helping customers improve productivity and achieve their business goals by partnering with leading developers of the applications they already use, including Microsoft 365. Business apps are intended to help achieve specific results. For example, shorten approval cycles that can reduce accounts payable or meet data compliance requirements, and reach front line mobile workers to retrieve inclusive company survey results. Now with Outlook mobile support of Actionable Messages, customers can act promptly, get results faster and increase reach when the emails can be acted on from their mobile devices.

1. Who are some of the notable partners developing Actionable Messages for Outlook mobile at this time?
We are working with a range of first-party and third-party partners—including Microsoft SharePoint, Office 365 Groups, @mentions in Word and Excel inline tasks and MyAnalytics for focus time to SurveyMonkey, ServiceNow, Sage and Freshworks —and the number of partners continues to grow.

SurveyMonkey is combining the power of Microsoft Graph with Actionable Messages within its latest integration with Microsoft to enable intelligent peer-to-peer feedback. This new integration empowers employees to define, gather, and reflect upon feedback from peers for professional development. Microsoft Graph helps SurveyMonkey’s platform effortlessly identify users’ most frequent collaborators, while Actionable Messages ensure that survey recipients can quickly respond right from Outlook, without switching tasks or context, and when and where it is most convenient. Launching in the coming months.

ServiceNow offers Actionable Messages for approvals and to survey end users that engage a department for services and support. With Actionable Messages, it’s easier and faster to approve or complete a survey when you can take action right from the email message. Frictionless action means faster approval times, more responses and feedback, and therefore more opportunity to create great experiences for customers.

Sage understands importance of timesheet approval for auditing and payroll purposes and that late or missing approvals impact customers and employees alike. Making it easier and faster to approve timesheets with Actionable Messages in Outlook, approvals can be done on the go and on time.

Freshworks is using Actionable Messages to help speed up the helpdesk support process and improve productivity. Agent assignment and ticket priorities can be set right from the inbox of the triage team leads so they complete key steps in the process faster and aim to exceed customer expectations.

2. Do users opt-in to enable Actionable Messages once available or is it rolling out automatically to Outlook mobile users?
There is nothing users need to do to enable Actionable Messages. Customers using the Microsoft sync technology for Outlook mobile will automatically receive support for Actionable Messages. At this time, the Microsoft sync technology is available to all Outlook.com accounts and is still in the process of rolling it out to all Office 365 accounts. It’s expected that the roll out of the Microsoft sync technology for Outlook mobile customers will be completed in the coming months.

3. What Outlook endpoints support Actionable Messages?
Outlook for Windows - Version 1805, Build 9330
Outlook on the web – Available to all Office 365 customers
Outlook for Mac – Coming later this summer. Version number TBD
Outlook mobile will support Actionable Messages for customers who are using the Microsoft sync technology which is available today for all Outlook.com users and gradually rolling out in the coming months to Office 365 customers. The availability of the Outlook mobile app that support Actionable Messages are:

Outlook for iOS – available today

Outlook for Android – will start to roll out in the coming week.

This means that you may have the Outlook mobile app that supports Actionable Messages but until your company is using the Microsoft sync technology, the user experience with the Actionable Messages may not be as designed. We expect most Office 365 customers to be transitioned to the Microsoft sync technology over the coming months.

You can determine if you are using the Microsoft sync technology for Outlook mobile: go to Settings and select your Office 365 account. There will be a notation at the bottom of this screen if you are using the Microsoft sync technology. Customers can contact their account team if they would like to expedite the transition.

4. Are controls available for Administrators to manage Actionable Messages?
Yes, Actionable Messages can be managed at the company tenant level by an administrator using a Powershell command to manage connectors. Disabling Actionable Messages would disabled them across all Outlook endpoints in addition to Outlook mobile. Google Calendar and Keep will now support Dark mode on Android

Dark mode is a popular feature that’s frequently requested by Calendar and Keep users. It creates a better viewing experience in low-light conditions by reducing brightness.

How to get started

Admins: No action required.

End users:

Calendar

Enable Dark mode by going to Settings > General > Theme.

Keep Enable

Dark mode by going to Settings > Enable Dark Mode.

Additional details

Both Calendar and Keep apps need to be updated to the latest version of the app to see this feature.

Calendar

Dark mode for Calendar will be supported on devices with Android N+ (i.e. Nougat and more recent releases).

Android Q users can set their OS to Dark mode, which means Calendar and all other apps will be in Dark mode by default. If users do not have their OS set to Dark mode, they can enable Dark mode in Calendar’s settings (see above).

For pre-Android-Q devices, users will be able to configure Calendar to go into Dark Mode when the device enters battery saving mode.

Keep

Dark mode for Keep will be supported on devices with Android L-P. For these devices, Dark mode can be enabled from Keep’s settings (see above).

For Android Q devices, Dark will be on by default if the OS is set to Dark mode. Or, it can be enabled in Keep’s settings (see above).
