    Hi
    Probably worried for nothing but I need this repair to go with no snags or extra cost.
    I am about to send my unbootable laptop in to Lenovo on a warranty claim.
    What happens if I have forgotten the password (pin number in my case) for the laptop and a password is required by Lenovo?

    I was thinking change the password on another device and sync the new password over to the unbootable laptop but not to sure how that works and if it does.

    The laptop is a brand new ASUS F751L.

    Everything was working just fine until one windows update knocked out the speakers.

    Headphones and headsets still worked just fine.

    Several hours on various forums trying many suggestions, but no luck.

    Called ASUS and they could not trouble shoot it over the phone. In went my laptop

    and back it came with windows 8.1.

    Can I get windows 10 back? Or do I need to pay for it as July 29th has been and gone?

    No point using my back up of the previous hard drive as it has the speaker fault.

    Any suggestions?

    They won't be worried about your password. They will just slap a new factory version on! Hope you have data backed up.

    And, no way any sync could work without windows running.

    Basically they wipe the drive and install. This is all something that you can do on your own and save a lot of money. The warranty does not cover user errors from Software installs or updates. If it turns on and you get an error screen or Black screen, there is plenty of info on this site to walk you through doing it on your own.

    The warranty only covers if there is a defect of say a bad motherboard, lcd inverter or keyboard. All with no signs of user damage. It does not cover installed software or having them reinstall the version of Windows that was shipped with your laptop.

    Do not forget that the OP will be out of almost $300 and have to wait up to 6 weeks for them to get it back to him, without it getting "lost" or damaged in shipment.

    Bad installs for operating systems are not warranty covered. Only manufacturer defects.

    Take the current hard drive out and put another in its place. When I sent one of our two Toshiba laptops in for bad keyboards, one had a Crucial SSD in it. I just kept it in there and had no problem with them not wiping out the drive.

    If you can get it to boot, you can run the Powercfg test to show what is going on, you can take that and put it in with the unit, along with your return information and what is exactly the problem. Also bag it before shipping and take the battery out and place it in a separate bag. Mark the hard drive, battery and power supply with a Paint pen. Just a dot or your initials so that if they do swap something out, you will know. Another trick is taking a dab of nail polish on one of the screws in the battery compartment marked and to the plastic, so that you can tell if they crack the case.

    If they are paying for shipping and you do not have the original box, make sure that you double box the unit. A copy of your address on the box that the laptop is in and the shipping label. That way if the outside box gets damaged, but not the inside, your information and the recipients is with it. Also keep record of everyone that you talk to for the work.

    I got stuck waiting two months for a keyboard replacement, because only one company makes all of the keyboards for all laptops, even for Apple's Macbook lines. Even with their delay and the fact that it was their fault, I could not even get them to cut the cost for repairs, because Toshiba like all other companies farm their repair work out to third party companies.
