Windows 10: PC randomly freezes

I've been trying to solve this problem of a friend of mine for a couple days now.

At first his laptop wouldn't even start the web browser, and some elements of the UI wouldn't work (i. e. search bar and update history menu). Some time later, his entire PC would freeze.

I tried running sfc /scannow, chkdsk, uninstalling updates, updating drivers, running the Windows Memory Diagnostic, resetting BIOS, etc.

After a while I tried to reset the PC, but it would always fail, so I told him to reinstall Windows.

It seemed that the issue was solved by doing so, but after an automatic update Windows started freezing at random again. Tried running DISM, uninstalling recent updates, but nothing. When entering safe mode, the computer works just fine, which makes me believe it's not a hardware issue.

Also he sometimes gets a BSOD with Machine Check Exception error. He also got that error on the previous installation, and the dump said hal.dll was the culprit. I haven't taken a look at the current installation's dump files, though.

Windows 10 freezes randomly

I had already tried turning off fast startup, to no avail.
Will look at the list you provided, thanks. Hard to do when computer freezes on the Windows loading screen though. *Biggrin

• Are there any third party applications that are currently installed?
