Windows 10: PC surround sound only plays 4.1 not 7.1

Hello,


I just setup a 7.1 speaker system. I am connecting via hdmi from my 2080ti to my sony receiver. I've tried everything but the only thing that will play is 4.1. My center will only play when set to stereo and my sides never play. When i play the test tones in windows all the speakers work just fine.


I've tried youtube, hulu, 4k movies etc... They all do the same thing...4.1. I hooked up my xbox to the receiver and 7.1 plays just fine.


Any help is appreciated.

5.1 Surround sound in windows 10

There are some reasons why you don't get the 5.1 surround sound. Some of these are caused by the type of audio format, how the file was encoded, if the file supports 5.1 surround sound and such. For us to determine what's causing
the concern more precisely, please provide information on the following:

• The type of file that you're trying to play.
• Troubleshooting steps done to rectify this concern

For now, before we go to a more in-depth troubleshooting, we suggest you run

audio troubleshooter. Look for Find and fix problems playing sounds.

Surround Sound on PC

There are two factors that will enable the 7.1 Surround sound. Hence I also have Dolby Atmos Supported 7.1 sound at my home as 7+1 surround sound system, I can say that it is either a windows update issue or driver issue. We verified that's it is not windows update hence the update that causes problem is not installed yet the driver part still leaves me some question marks. Those Options on Spatial sound enable the output to be anything more than just 2.0, so if the output is supported including output device the option will be available. Its just a mismatch between software and the hardware of the Headset.

I had the issue where my 7.1 stoped working providing me with surround sound yet was able to get it back removing the update that caused it.

I could now suggest to Uninstall audio driver entirely any available in windows safe mode, including the Razer Software and then restart windows to boot up Normally and allow windows to install the basic drivers.

If windows doesn't recognize it then update it manually in device manager. Let Windows install the basic drivers for both the Sound Card and the Headset.

Let's see if this will enable the option.

PS: As long as you are not using the 3.5 Audio jack as connection, These steps should help out at a point.

Microsoft store movie rentals downloaded to PC, not playing 5.1 surround sound

I contacted support by phone and Microsoft refused to say they had any issues with their software or rented movie files from their store, again trying to "urge" me to reinstall my audio drivers! They did manage to coax me into renaming an entire folder which
held what I suspected to be some of the DRM movie files information, which only managed to change the status of all my movies to Expired so I couldn't try playing them at all.

I was eventually told that if movies were actually purchased and downloaded, 5.1 surround audio would definitely play correctly! Huh, what?!?!

Now I didn't try playing all 7 movies that showed as having 5.1 surround sound which I had downloaded, only tried playing 3 of them, but none of the 3 worked properly so I did assume that the other 4 movies would also play in regular stereo sound as well.

If available movie rentals from the Microsoft store show they have 5.1 surround sound audio, and are allowed to be downloaded for offline viewing, but then won't play in Microsoft's Movies & TV app in the listed 5.1 surround sound audio which was advertised,
then that sure seems like unlawful false advertising by Microsoft, especially if they aren't going to warn customers of the possibility even after receiving multiple complaints about the issue!

Microsoft reps should personally be responding to each one of these reported issues immediately on these forums, and then either fix the issue with the files or app, or at least start listing under the rental information that 5.1 surround sound will not
work when movie files are rented and downloaded for offline viewing!

Luckily I rented all 7 movies when they had the special .10 deal going on, Microsoft should refund me my .70 anyway for the hassle of wasting an hour of my time on the phone with support, which did absolutely nothing, and then having to re-rent every movie
so I could stream them perfectly with 5.1 surround sound audio!
