Windows 10: PC will not Update from Windows10 ver 1803 to 1809

I have attempted following Notification Update to 1809 available to Install...both times the Update Stpped around 84% Complete...I got the Blue screen "Something Went Wrong"...etc...Undoing changes and back to 1803.


Before attempting the 2nd attempt I ran SFC /Scannow now, it showed no Integrity Issues. I followed instructions how to Clean out Windows Update Distributions Files (turning Windows Update STOP...before deleting Files in data and Download Folders....than START the Service.


When 2nd Notification appeared, I looked at Windows Update and saw 3 Updates, 1) definition Update 2)Update for Ver 1803 and the Update to 1809.


Update again ran until around 84% complete, I could see the circle stopping and starting...and finally...same result....Something went wrong...Undoing changes and back to Ver1803.


I do see where the other 2 Updates Installed 1) Definitions and the Update to ver 1803...but see in Update History 2 Attempts to Update to 1809...both Failed.


This PC has updated with no issues in the Past...it is 2 years old. Why is this failure happening? What is the Fix?

Win10: windows update stuck at never ending loop ?

When in win10:

• Update&security -> Windows update -> Finding update... .... .... ....

Planning to download the latest Win10.ISO (vers.1803) and manually update:
- Then wait that my ordered new SSD arrives and clone the old HDD to it.

How does one deal with -- the Win10 Ver 1803 update -- KB4023057 problem?

My sincerest thanks first of all, for your thorough and well-presented reply. I have studied your entire solution carefully, and I note that it mirrors what HP Support did over those 90 minutes by remote control of my laptop. After the Media Creation Tool,
download, etc. ( aseries of steps) there was a step with a screen that had the big words: WHAT NEEDS YOUR ATTENTION. Underneath this banner, one issue was listed: Intel Audio Display (KB4465877) as having stability problems with Win10 Ver 1809. At this
point, and because of this warning about KB4465877 specific to my laptop, HP Support advised me not to proceed with updating/upgrading (by forced installation) Ver. 1809, and to wait until Microsoft releases a correct Ver 1803.

It was at this point that I felt "lost", since it is unlikely Microsoft will issue a fix just for my laptop. However, based on your reply and some other websites I've read since, this Ver 1803 update seems like it is widespread -- I thought it happened
only on my HP ENVY 17 laptop and ones like it.

I am sorry to report back "bad news". I just wanted to see a clean, correct fix, as having an "unsuccessful" or "failed" update leaves me with the lasting impression that my laptop's Win10 is not in good order.
