PCCHIPS Old Motherboard - BIOS, Keyboard, HDD problems !

    Hi everyone,

It's not a Windows 10 thing, but maybe someone can help me !

I'm trying to revive a very old computer here. It's a 15 year old machine. I intend to install Windows 2000 on it. It's more for fun, I really don't need the machine, anyway it's very annoying not to get it working.

    Problems:
    1) It doesn't matter the kind of keyboard I put on it (PS2 or USB), ESC and F10 keys don't work and I can't return from any BIOS section to the main page, so I can't save my configurations.
    2) It doesn't recognizes the HDD (Seagate 160GB IDE). I'm guessing it's too big for the motherboard, but I'm not sure! It recognizes the ATAPI CD-ROM correctly and boots from it.

** I installed a new battery on the board, checked the PSU and put new flat IDE cables. The HDD and CDROM jumpers are correctly configured.

    Specs:
    MB: PCCHIPS 580LMR
    Chipset: SiS 530 / SiS 5595
    CPU: K6-2 500 MHz
    RAM: 384 MB PC133
VGA: Onboard AGP 8x (8MB Shared)

Does anyone can figure out what may be causing such problems?

    Thanks in advance !

    *Smile

    :)

Added HDD not showing in File Manager

So from your post the SSD is working and Windows boots with no problem?

Is there the option in your BIOS to enable / disable SATA Ports?

    Some BIOS require you to enable the SATA PORT that the old HDD is now installed into;

If your BIOS is set to SATA AHCI, then you can Hot Plug SATA drives.

Turn of PC, unplug data cable from the HDD, Turn on PC and plug in HDD data cable

(The Data cable is the one going from the HDD to the Motherboard)

Hopefully Windows will then see the drive

    I hope this Helps!

  3. On Ubuntu 16.04 Currently, need help going to Windows 10

Your motherboard treats USB flash as HDD drive. It is common for older hardware.

Looks like you can select only one HDD for boot at a time, so there must be separate selection of HDD priority in BIOS. Connect USB flash, go to BIOS, put it on first place in HDD list, and then select it in boot devices list.

I am concerned with your ram? Is that a mixed match of sticks. Might need to remove one. Try reseating them or maybe even cleaning the slots. Good luck to you. 15 years old is not that old. Win 2000 was the last os that didn't need a key I believe. I have two gateway one all in one serving as photo frames. 2000 is my os of choice. *Biggrin

I can't find any reference to that motherboard... not in Google, not on PCCHIPS website... and they have a pretty extensive archive.. are you sure that's the correct model number? I've found reference to an M580LMR, but this seems to be an SIS735 not an SIS530 chipset.

I have 3 PC133 128 MB sticks, 2 double sided and 1 single sided. I noticed that when the single sided one is in the middle slot (MB has 3), system doesn't boot, it must be placed in slot 1 or 3. I already rearranged them, removed the single sided one, but still nothing .

It was working just fine about one year ago and I unless my memory is failing I installed all devices with a M580LMR drivers CD. The chipset is really SiS530/SiS5595, but there's no model number written in any part of the board. I couldn't find the specifications of the board, specially the max HDD supported size. That's the only different thing that I installed since the last time I had it working.

Thank you for the inputs ! *Smile

    ~edit~

What makes me ill is that it used to work just fine before I deactivate it one year ago. *Mad

The reason I ask is that there may be a BIOS upgrade that will let it use a larger hard disk. I believe it may be limited to 30GB as is. But you would need to know the exact model, and version. You may be able to find this by writing down any numbers that appear on the BIOS boot screen.

You may have to look for a jumper on the hard disk to enable legacy disk mode to limit the disk size... although I don't know if they even have this option anymore on drives. You may need to find a smaller drive.

PCCHIPS Old Motherboard - BIOS, Keyboard, HDD problems !

The HDD doesn't have an option to limit size, so I think the next step is to update the BIOS. I had a PCCHIPS M755LMR board (for Pentium 3) that could recognize that disk, sadly it died in a short circuit.

The following numbers are what appears during post:

BIOS: American Megatrends - AMI BIOS - Released: 05/05/1999S
    MB: 52-0505-001437-00101111-07-1595-000000-001_V90_8670-H

I googled it and it seems that it's a M599LMR, not M580LMR *Shock
