    PDF's and Windows 10


    After a recent Windows 10 update whenever I now attempt to open a .pdf I get a pop-up telling me that Edge is now the home of .pdfs, effectively forcing me to open them with Edge. The pop-up gives no other alternative.


    1. I already have a .pdf reader or two

    2. I have no need to go through this window - it is just a time wasting inconvenience.

    3. I am comfortable with my existing .pdf reader.

    4. I prefer to make my own decisions. Ask once if I wish to change my .pdf reader - then leave me alone.


    Windows 10 PC is at present forcing me to use Edge to read my .pdf's after each time throwing me a pop-up that I need to click - and overwhelming my choice in "default apps by file type" in settings.


    Please help. How can I stop this pop-up? and use what I decide.

    Best free PDF software?

    I use:
    • UnityPDF to merge/split PDFs and to insert/extract pages
    • doPDF to create PDFs from any program that is capable of printing
    • Foxit Reader to view PDFs and to type in them

    Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

    Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

    Print to PDF missing in Printer List

    Hi William,

    We suggest that you disable and re-enable the Print to PDF feature. Here are the steps:

    • Click on the Start menu and type in Windows Features.
    • Choose Turn Windows features on or off.
    • On the next window, find Microsoft Print to PDF and disable it. Click
      OK to save changes.
    • Restart your PC.
    • Repeat the same steps to re-enable Microsoft Print to PDF.
    If the issue persists, we suggest that you perform the troubleshooting steps suggested on the link below under
    Advanced:

    Fix printer problems
