    Permission problems

    Hi,

Windows 10 64 bit. All updates applied.

Found an old hard drive with files from 2008

    Drive formatted NTFS

When I go to open anything, I get a permission error:

Word doc: Word cannot open the document user does not have access priveledges

.pdf: There was an error opening this document. Access denied.

.jpg: It looks like you do not have permission to view this document

Excel: Excel cannot access xxx.xls The document may be read only or encrypted

Files also cannot be copied: 'You need to provide administrator permission to copy this file'

I have gone into 'security' and added Everyone, System, my user ID, Users, guests.... individually and together

I have changed the owner to each of the above

    All have full control

    Nothing is read only

    Nothing is encrypted

Of several hundred files only 2 open. Both word doc's. I have replicated the security on these in other files as well as across the entire dirve with no luck

I have used disabled inheritance and enabled inheritance.

    Any help would be appreciated

    :)

  2. No permissions

    Hi,

I would suggest you to right click on the user's folder for your profile and check if the permissions shows as "read only'. If this is the case, it might be causing the issue. In this case, I would suggest you to go to C:\User folder, right click on the
folder with your username and follow these steps:

    • Open the properties of the main user profile folder where the files are located (such as Documents, Pictures, etc).
    • Go to the Security tab and click Advanced.
    • Check the box at the bottom of this window. It is labeled "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object" and then click Ok.
This does a one-time action that replaces the security on all the files/subfolders. It’s one-time, so you won’t find that box checked if you peek at it later. Try these steps and let us know the results for further assistance.

Windows 10 1709 System Restore problems...

That seems to be an attempt at Option 2 in the tutorial, which requires you to
    a. Boot to a command prompt (Did you?)
    b. You then seem to be mixing steps 3,4 and 5, thus your command is incorrect.

I suggest Option 1 is easier.

If you still have problems, please repost listing each specific step and saying which option from the tutorial you are using. Thanks.
