Cheers, I assumed it was as it came pre installed on the machine

  2. Nobody put a gun to my head - and even at that, I'll be as fussy, picky, demanding, choice-conscious, and selective as I like to be; thank you very much. *Smile. I won't just take it from somebody no matter what the circumstances. Sure, Microsoft may not owe me anything, but I'm not indebted to them either.

Nobody forces me to buy XYZ car, but I'll still cry warranty if the brakes are troublesome. You betcha!

  3. We're not speaking of the technical preview (beta), we're speaking of RTM when it comes out. Might want to follow along before telling everyone they're full of shit.

Who's talking about a beta OS. This is what they want to do with the final release. MS was off to a good start with Windows 10. Now with all the news of what they are planing to do I don't know if I want to upgrade to Windows 10 or not. MS is taking to much control over our computers and I for one don't like it. I never read anywhere that Windows 10 was going to be free for the insider group. I did read that we will be able to upgrade from the TP to the final release. You still have to have a qualifying OS to do it. So how is Windows 10 free if we have to sacrifice our older versions of Windows to install it? I would rather buy it retail and choose how I want to use it and what gets installed than have MS say here yeah go, a nice shiny new OS for free. All we ask is you let us control how you use it.

From what I read you will be able to temporarily postpone updates but not choose if you want them or not.

Me too and if you delete one, they probably will push it again.

From what I have read and M$ track record on updates it is a deal breaker for me also. Most non geeks will not even notice or care but I want a system that is stable.

  10. That's my concern also. If an update is going to break something I want a way to block it before it hoses my system.

    Just a thought
Is there a way to block MS updates using the MS firewall or a third party one, but still be able to use the internet and unblock it when you decide to install any updates.
Not the perfect fix, but at least gives you time to make sure the updates do not muck up your OS and gives you a little control back.

The M$ firewall I am sure M$ would not let you use that but your router firewall will.

Hm, something that just crossed my mind is? After you upgrade does everybody's install then become a Retail License? If you upgrade from an OEM install does it stay OEM? I ask because if you have an OEM license you call the OEM when things go south. How much sympathy are you going to get from Dell or HP if you take it upon yourself to upgrade to 10 and your system goes south in the process?

Something to keep in mind here is that the entire update process will be changing with Windows 10.

Microsoft will keep the "Insiders" program going, and those users will get updates first, before the general population. (They still plan to use the multiple "ring" update model). This will (hopefully) identify any potential problems before they hit the general public. If you are risk averse, you shouldn't be in the insiders program (not sure if insiders will still have the choice of fast/slow but probably).

Second, this is going to give Microsoft and 3rd party vendors a serious incentive to get drivers, patches and updates right the first (or at most second) time. They can pass the buck if installing a driver is optional, they can't if it's not. This should actually result in BETTER overall drivers and patches.. maybe not at first, but in the medium and long run.

All process changes are painful. And that's why, if you aren't comfortable with the ramifications, you probably shouldn't be an early adopter. However, once the process has completed, you need to get on board or risk being left behind.

Consider that Phones get updated more or less mandatorily all the time, and there are many many many more phones out there than PC's. Ever tried running an old version of Chrome? As always, there will probably be registry settings/group policy to bypass things if absolutely necessary, but this is probably going to be something you need to get used to, or run an enterprise version of Windows (if you can find a license).

I have a feeling that M$ wants to get the OEMs and the phone carries out of the loop.
