Windows 10: Piecing together the Windows as a Service puzzle for Windows 10

Discus and support Piecing together the Windows as a Service puzzle for Windows 10 in Windows 10 News to solve the problem; We're talking about a fundamental change in the way updates are released here. They will continue to use the "rings" model, and people in the fast ring... Discussion in 'Windows 10 News' started by labeeman, May 15, 2015.

You are comparing the old model to the new one. The servicing models are very different.
Apples and Oranges. All of that might be true, but it has no relevance to the historical record:
You can only estimate the performance of future software releases, by looking at the record of the software company's past software releases.
The new system may reduced the likelihood of dodgy updates, but it won't eliminate them.

Apple (who apparently write perfect software *sarc ) can't even get it right, despite the fact that they have the massive advantage of a tiny "hardware ecosystem".

Are you claiming that MS has never released any dodgy updates?

And the historical record has no relevance to an entirely new model of patch distribution.

You cannot estimate the performance based on a totally different model.

Where exactly did I say they've never released a dodgy update? And, I disagree. It will in fact virtually eliminate the possibility of a dodgy update making it to anyone other than early adopter/fast ring users. When millions of people are on the fast ring, it will be all but impossible for an untested scenario to rear its head when it gets to the slow ring. No, it's not strictly impossible, but so unlikely as to be almost unheard of. The only way it could happen would be if someone released an update to the slow ring by accident, and that seems unlikely.

    Hi there

    Subscription won't work

Current versions of pretty well any Linux you care to name can be made to look almost "More Windows than Windows" so any user could easily use it - especially if it was packaged like Android so the user didn't have to do anything with it other than simply use it.

People don't have trouble with Android or Apple phones / tablets so using a simple windows like version of Linux would be a doddle. Ms won't go down the subscription route for the OS as there are too many DECENT alternatives now. A few years ago Linux would have been considered too geeky but these days it can be made really simple on a dedicated desktop if required.

If subscription was REALLY the way to go would Ms Still be offering Office 2016 as a paid product rather than force everybody into Office 365.

For businesses and some educational facilities subscription could be the way to go but for a lot of individuals -- no way.

How many private people LEASE cars these days -- a few but the vast majority don't do it. Businesses on the other hand do make a lot of use on leasing - so it's really TWO different business models Ms need to follow.

    Cheers

I thought the issue about the "subscription" was cleared up already and there would not be one for Win10. The term service did not mean that MS would charge a subscription for the OS.

    Hi there

My confusion -- although "Service" to me implies a PAID offering in some form or other - usually a recurring one for as long as the service contract exists -- is this not then "a subscription" in the same way as monthly payments for ISP's etc. I suppose even paying for utility bills could be classed as a "subscription" although this is not generally classed as one. !!!

Hi Jimbo, see you are spouting more of that silly stuff called Linux. . .been there done that, not going back regardless what you make the GUI look like. . ., albeit you enjoy, and whenever you are able inject into any Windows or Mac OS suite how great and wonderful Linux is, or . . . *Smile

  7. It was, someone made a remark "New features could be optional if a subscription is required. Don't pay for the subscription you don't get the new features." to which I half jokingly said, "Don't pay your subscription and you'll likely find out you can't continue to use Windows. ". Then things went off track again. *Doh

    Hi there.

I LIKE Windows 10 -- I was merely stating that IF W10 were to become subscription only there are other alternatives that people could if they wanted to use instead.

However as has been posted Ms aren't going to make W10 a recurring chargeable feature for the OS. It's still a moot point as to whether "Service updates" will be chargeable. The balance so far seems to be that it won't at least for the foreseeable future.

    Cheers

In this case there will be no monthly payment to use Windows.. none.. zero.. zip. I think MS could have chose a better term in place of service but it just describes that MS views the Windows updates/patches as a service to the users.

*Ditto The term "service" to me is like a service contract for my A/C or the bug man, that sort of stuff. I think it throws a lot of people off. IMO
