Pin down shortcuts on the left side of the start menu

I did an upgrade from win 7 to 10. Some glitches, but nothing I can handle. But i didn't like when u pin down a short cut on the start menu, it went to right. I want some program to pin down on the leftside, like win7. Is't possible to do that on win10?

    :)

Shortcuts copied to %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs don't show up on the Start Menu

Most of these shortcuts I'd created myself, so they had not been put there by installers.

Your "right click on the corresponding shortcut on the left side of the Start Menu, and select 'Pin To Start'" trick worked like a charm, thank you so much!

Can't Pin to Left Side of Start Menu

    Caelan,

While I appreciate the attempt at offering a solution, what you suggest is a poor substitute for basic functionality that would allow users to simply pin any program, folder or url directly to the left side menu.

I shouldn't have to use programs before Microsoft deigns to recognize them as most frequently used programs. Look at Start10, StartIsback and the start menu in Classic Shell. These are all excellent, and add back the functionality that Microsoft took from
us when they ditched the Windows 7 start menu in favor of the ill conceived UI that helped Windows 8 actually shrink consumer demand for new PC's.

There is not another modern operating system that won't allow a user explicit control over the items shown in its launcher. Windows 10 was going to address this fatal UI flaw, but at the last minute someone in Microsoft once again thought that he or she
knew better than the users and industry experts, and chose to disallow user control over the list of items in the menu, and their sequence.

This once again illustrates a stunning lack of awareness of UI design, user experience principles, and an arrogance deriving from the notion that Microsoft knows better than their customers.

Truly an embarrassment for Microsoft and a disappointment for their customers. If third parties didn't release products like Start10, Startisback and Classic Shell, I could not have used any version of Windows past 7.

    Apparently not, not yet anyway!
Seed Feedback about it and maybe they'll consider implementing it! *Smile

  5. Not in the new start menu style, but you can change the look and function to that like Windows 7, I used Star8 by Stardock in Windows 8 and it works in Windows 10, they are making a Start10

I don't know, but like you, I would like to be able to Pin to the Start LIST, and with one click see the programs I want to open, and nothing else.

  8. Pin down shortcuts on the left side of the start menu

I'm with you on that Edwin, that's why I'm using Classic Shell for now. It lets me increase the font size too, so pt 11 is pt 11 and not pt 8 that you can't change or read on high resolutions. I'm still peeved about the title bar color options and how we have to hack our own theme. Thank god we have so many tutorials on here.

Hi, I'm trying to work out what the heck IS going on with the All Apps LHS of the start menu. Like you, I use Classic Shell.. I cna't imagine using the Win 10 start menu seriously.

Why am I interested? I came across a snag with my Cortana shortcut in All Apps, and thought- Cortana's working fine (it's very 'delicate' and easily perturbed by settings changes e.g.) - and I don't use it ... but this made me curious about the composition of the LHS of the W10 start menu.

I wanted to replace the Cortana shortcut 'cos it opened Store, whereas my desktop shortcut to Cortana opens Cortana. But I can't see how.

Now I updated from Win 8, so my start menu had a lot of entries. These I organised into folders.
Some of these I see in the Win 10 start menu, albeit without their customised icons, some I don't. One contains only one of many entries.

I'm wondering what the correlation is between what were the per user start menu entries and the All users entries and what I'm seeing in the Win 10 start menu, and why some folders are displayed but not others.

Classic Shell shows the menu structure I'm used to.

I'm beginning to try to explore where things are in the Win 10 start menu in terms of folders.
    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu Places
    is interesting.
    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
is as Win 8 - normal.
    C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu
is as Win 8 - normal.
    C:\Users\Default\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu
is as Win 8 - normal.

However, so far it's not clear to me where the 'Win 10' content of the LHS is defined.
