Windows 10: Playing DVD films

Yep I tried all that with some spectacle cleaner and soft micor cloth and yes the machine it will not work in is an Asus G750JM ROG yet my smaller Asus P2520LA with it booted to 7 (it is the one with a dual boot) plays it no problem so I am guessing it is either a bad optical drive in this one (ROG) or the Windows 10 it is running*Huh

Just out of curiosity I will boot the smaller Asus into 10 and see what happens as I reckon the smaller laptop is so much faster than this one and easier to use anyway.

Anyway the disk did eventually play in the DVD machine so who knows what it is or was*Confused

DVD's can usually be cleaned with CLEAN WATER -- don't use any alcohol / cleaning fluid -- and then dry properly. VLC will play almost every audio and video codec known to man or beast (with a very rare exception of some .m2ts files ripped with an old video capture piece of hardware) in the entire universe so if DVD still doesn't work try changing it. Incidentally it's worth ensuring the laser in the DVD PLAYER (on the computer etc) is clean --I think you can still get one of those special laser cleaning DVD's you just insert on the player for a few seconds.

Yep Jimbo mate I used one of those cleaners several times and I think it is something wrong with the disk the strange thing is the dual boot laptop in 7 plays the disk like there is nothing wrong yet in my larger Asus it will not play with anything and using whatever software I have installed including VLC which I am finding difficult to work out how to play disks with. I suppose it could be the drive in this machine I don't know but it does play audio stuff. Got me beat but anyway for some reason known only to itself the disk is playing in the DVD recorder after being picked up on that small Asus I have.

The cleaning well I tried cleaning it with spectacle lens cleaners and DVD cleaners that I have brought from the same store so I don't think it is dirt to be honest . If it were scratched I could understand some sort of read problem and in that case I would polish out the scratch using some proprietary material called "Silvo" a water based silver polish as the name suggests and have done that for years now - don't be tempted to polish a disk with a material called "Brasso" again a metal cleaning substance but it has a mineral oil solvent base that will "melt" the clear surface of a disk. Takes a lot of elbow grease and patience but it really works wonders even with the most badly scratched disks that I have had. Of course it wouldn't take out a scratch form say a penknife dragged across the surface but for the light scratching and scuffing it is brilliant.

 

Open VLC. On the menu bar, at the top left click Media then select Open Disc... An 'Open Media' window should pop up listing your DVD drive(s) and (if a drive contains a readable video DVD) the title of the disc. Click 'Play'.

If you don't see a menu bar you're running VLC with the minimal interface, Ctrl+H will switch to the full interface. Or just use Ctrl-D which takes you straight to the 'Open Media' window.
