Made from Dreams

This week marks a year since the world was introduced to the Xbox Series X and Power Your Dreams. Since then, weâve explored the possibilities of the next generation of gaming and, in the past few weeks, experienced the worldâs most powerful console firsthand.

When we considered the full potential of next-gen gaming and the meaning behind Power Your Dreams, we wondered if the Xbox Series X could actually power gamersâ dreams. With the help of a few members of the Xbox community and some incredibly talented creators, we set out to discover just that.

Using the most advanced dream recording technology, dream scientists conducted lucid dreaming experiments, capturing and decoding the real dreams of gamers after they experienced Xbox Series X. We then partnered with world renowned artists and creators, who took inspiration from the dream data to bring these gamersâ dreams to life through a content series weâre calling, âMade from Dreams.â This content series continues our Power Your Dreams campaign and demonstrates the next generation of Xbox consoles are what dreams are made of â literally.

âLucid Odysseyâ

In this short film created by Academy Award-winning director, Taika Waititi, (âJojo Rabbit,â âThor Ragnarok,â âThor: Love and Thunderâ&#157, the worlds of art, science, and gaming are merged âbringing the dreams of gamer Krystal Holmes (aka MoonLiteWolf) to life, after she played the Xbox Series X. This epic adventure captures the spirit of the actual research process, the boundless depths of MoonLiteWolfâs detailed and vibrant dreams and then actively challenges our perceptions of one particular Xbox character, as we have known them.

MoonLiteWolf stars in the film as herself with the narration throughout the film coming from the actual audio recorded during the dream study.

OBJâs âDream Kitâ

Meet the controller and shoe of Odell Beckham Jr.âs dreams. Inspired by the real dreams OBJ had after playing Xbox, where he controlled big, shimmering stars in outer space, we brought to life a custom set of controller designs and a custom pair of Nike Air Force 1 shoes designed in partnership with Odell and Nike. Stay tuned as fans will have the chance to win the custom controllers and custom shoes in an upcoming sweepstakes on Xbox Twitter.

âDigital Dream Artâ

Visual artist and director Quentin Deronzier takes a surreal approach to interpreting Stallion83âs dreams, after he experienced next-gen gameplay, shedding light on how vivid and immersive they were through a custom series of high-fidelity digital art content.

âAR Dream Filtersâ

With augmented reality filters, made from Emericagirl24âs dreams, digital artist Johanna Jaskowska gives gamers the opportunity to express themselves through a series of unique, re-imagined and unconventional lenses never experienced before in the gaming industry.

âWalking in Steveâs Dreamsâ

When everybody plays, we all win is a belief at the core of team Xbox. And for this program, we partnered with audio studio, Big Orange who created an immersive and accessible 3D audio adventure story inspired by the real dreamâs gamer, BlindGamerSteve, had after experiencing Destiny 2: Beyond Lightâand the 3D Spatial Sound capabilities of the Xbox Series X.

Steve stars in the story as himself, providing voiceover for his dream experience alongside the actual audio recorded during the dream study.

App Compatibility for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S Consoles

UWP applications (both apps and games) are a pivotal part of the Xbox experience. As we near the launch of the new console generation, we want to address some common questions regarding app and game development on the new Xbox family of consoles. If you have been developing for the Xbox One X using UWP and leveraging the Dev Mode Activation App, the same features will be supported on the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. Please refer to the following FAQs for further guidance.

FAQs:

Will my current UWP app or game continue running on the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S?

Yes, apps and games running on the Xbox One should continue to run at parity on the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. The underlying platform APIs and codecs that UWP apps are built on have been tested and validated with key scenarios by Microsoft and through thousands of hours of usage in our internal Xbox flighting program. These APIs and codes are supported on the new Xbox family of consoles. When the new Xbox family of consoles is released, we recommend doing additional validation of your UWP app or game on the chosen device if desired.

How can I verify that my UWP app or game is working on the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S?

Devkits are not publicly available. UWP application developers should continue to rely on the Dev Mode Activation App used on the Xbox One X to convert their retails consoles into a development kit to test for compatibility As the same APIs and codecs are used between the Xbox One X and the new Xbox family of consoles, an app that works on the Xbox One X should continue to work on the new Xbox family of consoles

When the new Xbox family of consoles are available in retail, app partners can rely on Dev Mode Activation App to convert those consoles into a development kit.

Do I need to change or rewrite my application from the current UWP application?

No app development changes are required for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. You use the same SDK, build environments, and UWP APIs to develop your applications. The same publishing process for UWPs on the Xbox One will continue to apply for the new Xbox family of consoles.

Are there any features my app can take advantage of for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S?

We focused our efforts on backwards compatibility for apps on our new Xbox family of consoles to make it easier for our partners and enable a seamless transition for your app from the Xbox One generation to the next generation of Xbox consoles. This means that all of your favorite apps will carry over to the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S on day 1.

We currently do not have additional features for apps on the new Xbox family of consoles that are not already a part of the Xbox One X.

Will I need to sign a new agreement to bring my Xbox One UWP application to the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S?

No, the existing Store App Developer Agreement terms will continue to cover distribution for apps on the new Xbox family of consoles. No additional agreements are required to run your app on the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

Will my app show that it supports the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S on the Store?

Yes, Microsoft will list the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S as a platform on the Store PDP. No additional work is required from the app partner to add in Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S listing to the Store

With the global launch of the Power Your Dreams campaign, we turn to the positive experience that gaming provides us all. Power Your Dreams speaks to the idea that when we game – whether on console, PC or phone, we dream. Sometimes we dream about being someone else or about being our true selves. Sometimes we dream of an epic win with a group of friends or a solo adventure that challenges what we think we’re capable of. And sometimes we dream of first place or making this world a better place.

We’re excited to debut our launch trailer titled, “Us Dreamers.” In “Us Dreamers,” hero protagonist Daniel Kaluuya (Academy award nominated actor from blockbusters like “Get Out” and “Black Panther”) leads us all on an inspirational journey about what it means for gamers to dream and reach our potential, together.

The story begins with Daniel picking up his Xbox Wireless Controller after returning home. He is greeted by online friends and is quickly transitioned into his gaming dream, moving from live action to CG. Daniel travels through his dream, passing through spectacular and immersive visuals of dream-inspired gaming worlds before discovering another gamer and her representation of her own gaming dream. Together, they realize that while each of our gaming dreams and journeys are unique, there are many gamers and many individual dreams that all come together with the power of Xbox.

Beyond the compelling visuals and relatable story, the true soul of “Us Dreamers” comes through with the featured track, “No Ordinary” a new song by Labrinth – a multiplatinum-selling singer, songwriter, Grammy nominated producer and Emmy award winning composer of one of 2019’s biggest shows, HBO’s Euphoria. “No Ordinary” provides an inspirational audio experience that uplifts the storytelling and complements the visual spectacle seen in “Us Dreamers.”

As we debut the world premiere of “Us Dreamers” on our Xbox channels today, coinciding with the first-time release of Labrinth’s “No Ordinary” track, Xbox fans can check out the broadcast debut during Sunday Night Football on Sunday, October 11, 2020 when the Minnesota Vikings take on the Seattle Seahawks. Kick-off is estimated for 5:30 p.m. P.T.
