    PowerShell novice general questions

I wrote my first DOS bat file in 1988 and when PowerShell arrived I largely ignored it. Now circumstances have contrived to entice me into exploring its utility. Having now written a small script it is obvious PowerShell is much more than simply a turbocharged DOS CMD prompt but I have a couple of questions:

    1. Is there any reason to use the Core version instead of the Desktop version given Im an individual user with a desktop primary computer and a very small (2 PCs, a printer and potentially a NAS component) network?
    2. Are both PowerShell and PowerShell ISE always components of a given PowerShell version (Ive read a couple posts here regarding version 7.X but it is unclear if I should upgrade from the 5.1 and if I did is ISE automatically included)?
    3. Is there anything I can do via DOS CMD that I would not be able to with PowerShell?

Thanx in advance for your time & expertise.

    :)

PowerShell instead of Commandline in Creators Update

Interestingly enough my personal laptop just got the update...and still has Command Prompt listed, not PowerShell...

Edit: Not that it matters...I use both regularly. *Toast :toast:

    PowerShell question

The username you typed in underneath your diagram is the username for the Built-In Admin account.

    • To get the prompt that you wrote you would have to log in as the Built-In Admin account and then open Powershell from there.
    • I have never heard of anybody running Powershell using the Built-In Admin and have no idea if it would work [there are several undocumented limitations to the Built-In Admin account in Windows 10]

Is that what you meant or were you just asking how to get an elevated Powershell window?

    • This is done by right-clicking on the Powershell link in the Start menu & selecting Run as Admin.

    General question

    Hi all,

I have a general question. Are people on this site that are listed as Microsoft Support Engineer actually Microsoft employees? Or are they IT specialists with qualifications such as MCSE, MCP, etc?

    Regards,

    Steve
