Windows 10: Pre-Order Windows 10

So far, all Newegg has presented are OEMs. So, yeah, we know that.

 

That gave me pause for a moment. I thought that with Windows 8, MS basically made System Builder copies equivalent to retail copies for self-built systems. (It was OK for the original owner to transfer the license to a new system, just like for a Retail license. If a system with a System Builder license was sold to someone else, it was supposed to act like a traditional OEM license, not transferable to new hardware.)

A little online hunting makes me think that I was correct in that.

However, I didn't know that Win8.1 went back to the same license terms as Win7: System Builder licenses are for resale only. They're intended for small computer shops, who don't do enough business to justify the mass OEM licenses used by the major PC makers. Anyone buying an 8.1 System Builder license for personal use is in technical violation of the EULA.

I hope that the Win10 license situation is sorted out by the time I do my next PC system replacement. I have a disused Win8.1 license that I could use to qualify for the upgrade, but I may not want to use it before 7/29/2016.

 

Microsoft has changed all of their licensing. I've only used an OEM copy once in my building, I used it on a personal PC and the police didn't come out and arrest me. *Smile However, I had no idea that I was forbidden. *Sad

I qualify as an OEM in that I built the system and I never tried to move it to another computer, so . . .

What does "Pre-Order" mean ???

Either you ORDER the product or just buy it from a store.

What's Pre-order -- getting confused here -- can't be any difference between ordering and "pre-ordering" -- maybe it's just me but anybody - please explain.

It means the product isn't released yet and you won't get it until it is.

Also, those prices aren't what I call a good deal!

 

Hi Jeff, You might have to use the smaller version for the GIF to work.(This is one of the two I posted isn't it?) That's why I shrunk one at Resize Animated GIF Online

 

Kinda like prepay, Jimbo. They get the money now, but you don't get the product until it's released. *Smile

Nothing new in that -- like buying a ticket in advance for The Super bowl or say an Opera at London's Royal Opera House for end of December etc. So what's so special that it needs to be called something else. Just confuses people. I Don't "Pre-Order" a ticket to go to the Royal Opera !!! I just pay in advance -- and if the booking period isn't open the booking just gets added to the waiting list and is submitted when the booking period opens. --Simple -- no special "phrasess" needed unless it's to SUCKER the customers into thinking they are getting something special..

In any case the deals on offer here don't look that good.

Actually the best buy would be Windows 7 Pro. Pop that on your PC image it, upgrade to 10 image that. Then you could run a dual boot set up or restore 7 if 10 does not run well on your system. I am of course assuming you have an OEM copy of 7 on the machine already which would usually be Home Premium so you end up with 10 pro which gives you more options than just the core 10 OS would.

Beats me, Jimbo. I just posted Pre-order (preorder gives a red squiggly) because NewEgg's email to me had it.

 

I saw that, Indiana, but since I already have Windows 8.1 and Windows 7, I have more than enough licenses. *Smile

 

I think Thurrott has cleaned up his act some; he used to be "almost" squeaky clean, but not quite.
