You asked what would delete files in the %Temp% folder, and that is exactly what the others are trying to tell you.

In addition to what the others posted, apps themselves will often cleanup their own files in the %Temp% folder when done working.

There is not just one process that deletes files in the %Temp% folder since it is a working directory used by just about everything.

  3. Thanks EyeInTheSky: that is exactly the kind of suggestion I was looking for!

Alas I have already turned off Storage Sense so that is not the source of deletions on my PC

Windows components can delete their temp files whenever they wish. The same for applications. This may happen at times other than expected. The activities of Storage sense are in addition to this.

Edit: The temp folders are for the exclusive use of Windows and applications. They are not for user usage.

  6. zbook when I open DiskClean I do not have options like you said. I get this:

Prevent Windows 10 from emptying %temp% [IMG]

On the next screen "Temporary Files" (which is the folder I am interested in) is unchecked.

Make sure the files that you want to retain are not checked within the menu.

If you use Ccleaner or similar cleaning software post an image into the thread.
For Ccleaner > click windows tab > scroll down to system and advanced > post an image into the thread

Windows has cleaned the it's temporary files from various places,in every version of Windows I've used since the Mid 1980's as have the many various other operating systems I've used, the cleaning is performed by many processes, based on various criteria

If you shut down every process that removes Temporary files you would create a rather expensive doorstop, as the operating system would cease to work, either because the system processes would have been stopped or because the temporary files had filled every bit of space on the system

The temporary name should give a clue to the purpose of a temporary file. If you wish to retain files place them in any regular user folder - It's a simple way around your "Issue"

Prevent Windows 10 from emptying %temp%

Look at Task Scheduler. Probably some actions being triggered out of there as well that affect Temp files and Folders.

[I want to revisit a file I have downloaded previously, say a spreadsheet]
Why on earth are you looking in %Temp% for a downloaded file.

  15. - no Ccleaner
    - task scheduler: see below. No obvious culprit but thanks for the suggestion
    - I mean I open a file via firefox: when you do so it leaves a copy in %temp% (in firefox btw I have unchecked all options for it to delete cache files so that is not the source of my issues)
