Windows 10: Printing Error on HP Envy 5540 Printer Display Panel

My HP Envy 5540 All-in-One printer is no longer printing following a Windows 10 64-bit update. The control panel on the printer reads "tray is empty or not closed." This is NOT TRUE.

Thanks for the suggestion but I already tried that and it made no difference .I have now managed to get printing by downloading and installing HP eprint. but the action centre still states printer driver unavailable . I am not able to scan with the envy
5540 so I may go and buy a new printer. problems I could do without.

My Envy 5540 would not print in colour or duplex automatically. I did finally get it to work, but not exactly with your instructions. You definitely pointed me in the right direction. I have had this trouble periodically with this printer. It is a windows
issue that HP doesn't think exists.

Yes, you are correct.

One of the recent Win10 updates replaced the Windows 10 IPP driver. It took me 2 days to troubleshoot the issue. I wish Microsoft would beta test their updates more rigorously like it used to. It keeps deploying updates that continue to perplex today's Windows
consumers. If this keeps up, I may consider going to an Apple MAC OS-based system.

This worked for me, but it will require you to make some setting adjustments.

Install the typical HP Envy 5540 Printer software and drivers

Open the “HP ENVY 5540 Series Full Service Software and Drivers”.

Install the software WebPack by clicking on “EN5540_Full_WebPack_1119.exe”.

This will install the software and drivers.



Reboot the machine.



Install the new HP Envy 5540 Universal Printing PCL Drivers

Open the “! HP Envy 5540 Universal Print Driver” Folder.

Open the “upd-pcl6-x64-6.9.0.24630” Folder.

Click on the “Install.exe” application.

This will install the new HP Universal Printing PCL 6 Drivers

When prompted, select the HP PCL 6 Drivers instead of the installed HP Envy 5540 Drivers.



SETTINGS

Open “Control Panel.”

Open “Devices and Printers”.

Find the “HPB042E5 (HP ENVY 5540 series)” Printer Icon. It can also be called “HP Envy 5540 series”.

Right Click on the icon and select “Printer properties”.

(I share my printer via wi-fi, but I'm leaving this set of instructions out.)

Select the following conditions:

HP ENVY 5540 PROPERTIES / ADVANCED

SELECT: Start printing immediately

SELECT: Print spooled documents first

CLICK ON Print Processor

SELECT: winprint and RAW

MAKE NO CHANGES TO PRINTER FOLDER IN DEVICE MANAGER

Go to DEVICE MANAGER / PRINTERS /

You will find a printer called “Unknown Device”.

Don’t worry about it. Leave it as is!
