Open administrative command prompt and copy and paste this command:

    C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther

It will generate a folder which may be hidden.
Locate the following files using file explorer (you may need to check or uncheck the hide options)

    setuperr.log

    setupact.log

Also find the CBS and DISM logs.
Post share links using onedrive into the thread.
    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
    C:\Windows\Logs\Dism\Dism.log

Just a guess here, it might be because your active system partition is the one labeled Windows 10 Clean Install and not the System Reserved Partition. How did that happen?

My active partition is the one labeled Windows 10 - of that I'm sure. The Clean Install partition doesn't have any apps installed in it. I set it up to try different things without damaging my primary install. Thanks for trying.

Having extra Windows partitions around has been known to prevent upgrades. Recommend you delete it - or if you want to keep it, create a disk image of it and then delete it. This will also give you some unallocated space on your disk- the lack of that is another possible cause of failure.

    - how did you do that? Did you somehow install Windows twice onto the same drive? Begs the question of the relationship of the other partitions - e.g. Recovery - as regards to which installation they relate.

    Problem doing a Repair Install

I just installed Window 10 Clean Install on a separate partition. It's the same version as the 'plain' Windows 10 installation.

If I call Microsoft on my issue, will they want to charge me to decipher why I can't do a repair install? Do you know what Microsoft's tech support number is?

I don't think the problem is necessarily the presence of the Clean Install partition. It's the fact that it is the active system partition. You should be dual booting from the System Reserved Partition, not the second Windows 10 OS partition.

I've got 2 computers with multiple Windows installations/partitions and they all update just fine - but they are booting from the EFI System Partition (because of UEFI) and not from one of the Windows partitions.

I have a quick question about repair install. I have an unbootable Win10 partition. Messages about missing critical files. Can a RI be done here? Or am I SOL? Thanks.

Jon, please start your own thread.

W1MNK: I see what you mean from the Disk Management screen shot. Never noticed that before. I do want to have a dual boot into the exact same Windows 10. The 'Clean Install' version is used like a sand box - to play with possible faulty or suspect software or just something I'm not sure of. Since you've done this before, please tell me how to correct my system. This is just a little over my head. I have a feeling you're correct and that is the problem. In any case, I would like to correct this error. Thank you.

Nisko, I just found the answer in the tutorial that Brink authored. I can't do an in place repair unless I can boot the partition. I was afraid that was the case. Thanks for helping me understand.

    Problem doing a Repair Install

To NavyLCDR and dalchina and Jon (and anyone else who can help me - I'm confused as to whom I'm communicating with): I think I now understand the potential problem(s). Please tell me how to set up a dual boot of Windows 10 (the primary should be the drive with all my apps on which I want to perform a repair install. The secondary version of Windows 10 will be my 'playground' or 'sandbox.' I just created a flash drive using the Microsoft Media Creator of Windows 10 - and have the kb file with all the updates as of today. I also have an image of my entire hard drive that is current. I used Macrium 7 Professional for that. I also have all my updated drivers. I want to preserve my primary Windows 10 - way too many apps and settings to reproduce on a clean install. If you can help, please tell me step by step what to do. You folks are a little above my head. By the way, I believe I have a boot manager editor - if that's helpful. Thank you...........

OK, I've made some changes to my system - eliminated the dual boot. Here is a screenshot of the new Disk Management. Tried the Repair Install several times again - same result. *Sad Sorry - this is the wrong attachment of Disk Management. Next post has the correct one.
