Windows 10: problem opening files

Hi


My Windows 10 PC has developed a problem in the last 3 weeks, and i'm not sure how best to fix it. I've followed some advice posted on here but with no luck. Before I try fixes i've seen non MS sites i thought i'd ask on here. I have to use my PC to work from home at the moment which may have caused the issue even though i have a firewall/up to date anti virus stuff. In the last few weeks i've had to download a great many files, and i've scanned them all with Norton which removed scripts off some and scan again once they're in the download folder. I've installed all the Windows updates bar one, i've not installed the 1909 update as i've heard it's riddled with issues and i've got enough to contend with.


Anyhow, the problem is:

When i open the File Explorer to open folders/files etc, then try and either open or right click on a file the window then freezes and the window eventually crashes, shutting any other open file windows along with it. it is very frustrating. it doesn't happen with every folder though, but if i have say 2 folders open and one works ok then open one that may have the bug then they both have the problem.


I have tried the following so far by opening the CMD prompt under run as Admin:

C:\WINDOWS\system32>sfc /scannow

it found something the first time but it didn't fix the problem i don't know what it found

then i tried it again and it found nothing.


then i tried :

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth

it said:

Version: 10.0.18362.1
Image Version: 10.0.18362.778
[==========================100.0%==========================] No component store corruption detected.

The operation completed successfully.


then tried:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool

The operation completed successfully.

with no luck, i'm still having the same problem. It seems worse if i try and access my Downloads folder i use Firefox primarily, i've emptied it and scanned it with Norton but found no reason why it stops working.


My files are still there and i can access them using programmes such as Excel etc and the files work fine, i just can't get the File Explorer system to work properly. Any suggestions on how i can fix this?

opening .dds files with gimp

Simply, HOW? I got the DDS plugin but the POS wont open DDS files still. Can someone give me a step-by-step rundown of how to install the DDS plugin for gimp so I know if I'm missing something?

 

PowerPoint file crashes PowerPoint upon opening

since this happens in some of the computers only, suggest that you open the file on working computer and copy everything and paste to a new powerpoint file.
most of the time it works to me. *Smile

1. Since when are you facing this issue?
2. Have you made any changes on your computer, prior to this issue?

To fix issues with Word documents opening slowly, I suggest you to attach a different template to the document and check if that helps. Follow the below steps to attach a templates.

Steps:-

1. Open Word application.
2. Click on File and select Options.
3. Select Add-Ins from the list.
4. Under Manage Select Templates and click on
   Go.
5. In the pop up, type Normal in the Document template.
6. Click on Ok.

To fix issues with Adobe files opening slowly follow the below troubleshooting steps and check if that helps.

Steps:-

1. Open Adobe application.
2. Click on Edit.
3. Select Preferences option.
4. Tap on General.
5. Uncheck Enable protected mode at startup.
