Problem permanently assigning drive letters to flash disks

I have two flash disks of the exact same brand and size (128GB each, formatted as exFAT). I have a problem in that when I insert either of them in a USB port, it's assigned a drive letter which may not be what I would like. Ideally I want each flash disk to be always assigned its own drive letter. One difference between the flash disks is that I have given them a different volume name.

I tried Disk Manager to assign them the drive letters that I want, but the settings are not permanent and change again after the next reboot.

    :)

help. USB drive isn't assigned a drive letter.

Any usb flash drive I plug into my computer isn't assigned a drive letter. The physical drive shows in the "safely remove hardware" but it doesnt show up in disk management. I have tried to populate the volume thru the safely remove hardware properties window and it does pop up in the list but it doesn't stay there. This isn't a format or assign a letter problem. It's more complicated then that. Maybe one of the services needed for usb drive management was disabled? Suggestions needed. btw external usb harddrives work fine.

  3. Problem with USB flash drive letter using Disk Management

Was I misunderstanding the way drive letter assignment works? I was thinking if you assigned a drive letter using the New Simple Volume Wizard in Disk Management that the chosen letter would be permanently attached to the flash drive unless I went
back into Disk Management and manually changed the drive letter.

Am I correct now in thinking then that if someone put a letter on a flash drive with the intent of it being a fixed letter
in Disk management e.g letter Z. If later on another flash drive was plugged in that also had a fixed drive letter Z that had been set up using Disk Management that the last one inserted would still dynamically change itself to the next available
    drive letter?

I suppose what I'm asking is..even if someone wanted to have a fixed drive letter on a flash drive. It would still only be fixed until another flash drive is inserted that has the same drive letter. Then the last one inserted would be dynamically assigned
the next available drive letter by Windows so there wouldn't be a conflict where one of them wouldn't be recognised in Windows.

In other words USB flash drive letters will always be dynamically assigned with the next available drive letter no matter what?

Problem permanently assigning drive letters to flash disks

    USB drive letter assignments

    Long-winded background:

I have a USB flash drive that I assigned to drive D: in Disk Management. Occasionally when I'm not thinking, I plug it in when another external drive is connected and already assigned D: by Windows. The flash drive then gets reassigned as E:. I know I
can switch it back to D: in Disk Management, but frankly my original reason for assigning a fixed letter is not such a big deal anymore. Is there a way to "undo" fixed letter assignments? I'd like to just let the drive float again.

    TL;DR:

Once you assign a fixed drive letter in Disk Management, is there a way to "undo" and let the drive assignment float again?
