    Problem with desktop screen

Have just clean installed 10 on my main laptop and after a very long update session have got round to setting it up as I want it.

Now I set the desktop to look as I like it but then all of a sudden some of the old 7 desktop icons and taskbar appeared under the 10 ones. They are in a lower res than the 1920x1080 I have set on the machine and I don't know how they got there or how to get rid of them. The SSD I used has only been used for an initial install of 10 and I did clean it before I started the install.
Any ideas please as to how I can put this right??*Sad

    :)

  2. Windows 10 Problem

After I updated Windows 10 today as I was instructed, I can no longer get on the internet. My wifi no longer shows up to click on it. It was working fine until I allowed the install. I have tried restarting the HP Spectre x 369 laptop and the router,
but this has not helped. (I am using a borrowed Apple computer to search for a solution.) I need help to get back online. Can anyone help or tell me who I might contact for help?

That looks like you took a print screen of a 7 desktop and are using it as a wallpaper, if that's a clean install there shouldn't be any remnants of 7 anywhere.

Can you check your wallpaper folder just to rule that out.

Yes mate I just found the problem after resetting thw 10 I had an idea maybe it was a pic saved in the old 7 library I had inserted on a stick and it was exactly what it was.

I reverted back to the default pics and the superimposed stuff went away. So I just need to download my space pics to this new install for my wallpapers.*Smile

Just as matte of interest and I have just found going through settings I have the Home version on this pre 7 Pro machine and I don't remember having the choice of Home or Pro during install.

So just out of curiosity is there lot of difference between the two versions?? Apart from the policy manager nothing that I think I need.

    That was easy. *Thumbs

Honestly, I'm not really sure John. I have one box that has Home on it but I haven't fired it up in a while.

If you are supposed to have Pro then you should try to get that squared away, you may end up with a non valid install shortly.

    Hi there John,

There's a whole slew of differences: Compare Windows 10 Editions

You had a Win7 Pro license, you should get a Win10 Pro license.
It's not as though MS is going to reimburse you the cost difference *Wink

Using a key for a qualifying previous version of Windows was introduced in November, I think.
I'm not sure if MS coded using the key for a qualifying previous version of Windows to change editions

You might be able to System > Change Product key and enter the Win7 Pro key for that machine

If the key doesn't change the edition from Home to Pro, then the only thing I can think of is to download a new ISO from Tech Bench
The download is larger that 4GB because it has both Home and Pro in the ISO

Then do a Clean Install - Windows 10 Forums

I suspect your existing install media only has the home edition.

Hello Bill long time.. Yes mate I might have to redo the whole darn thing if thee activation with my 7 Pro key doesn't work. I have downloaded form the tutorial and it did say both versions would be available but like I said I never got the option and I was able to sign in not using my Microsoft account which the other machine had to be signed in with.

Edit no mate the thing will not let me activate using the 7 Pro key so looks like another install and frankly it is really giving me grief having spent half the day getting this far.

Did you try the last method on this page to upgrade to Pro from Home:?

Hello Navy no mate not on this machine to my knowledge - should I just install 7 bare bones as it were then upgrade?

  12. Navy beat me to the punch and with a much better suggestion than I was going to offer.

Might as well try it John.

Instead of using your Win7 Pro key, you first use the generic Win10 Pro key, then enter your Win7 Pro key to activate after Win10 upgrades from Home to Pro
    Cool!

    Problem with desktop screen

Thanks Bill I might have to just try that I am right now installing a bare bones 7 Pro to do just that.

Problem is now for three months the national broadband provider has been just a nightmare of dropouts leaving me to rely at times on my expensive pre paid modem. My only alternative is to upgrade the original 7 Pro install spinner I suppose*Sad

  14. I'm sorry if I misled you, the post didn't mean to reinstall Win7 - it meant try upgrading the Win10 Home to Win10 Pro using the Win10 default key.

Then Pro is on the machine, you would activate it using your Win7 Pro key.

And yes, it has been a long time mate *Wink
Hope things are well with you
    - don't ask me that question though, things were better before the stroke.
Can't complain too much ... does no good - only time and effort help.

ThanksBill right now I have installed the bare bones and found a link toupgrade it even without having to do all those updates for 7. Theupgrade is almost done and if this doesn't work I will try theother method.

Ithink what did throw me a bit was that ther eare two clean installtutorials and I was n't real sure of which one to use and it wasthose missing points during the clean install.

WellI spoke too soon it got to 95% and the broadband dropped out yetagain. So I shall have to clean the drive yet again and start formscractch using that first activation key the use the 7 Pro key afterthat .

Honestlymate the broadband is a nightmare out where we live at the moment I'dgive anything for a decent connection.

    NowI shall PM you too.
