Windows 10: Problems downloading Windows 10

Although I live in London I spend several months a year in Athens, Greece, where I have a Dell Ispiron 5558 that came with the Windows 8.1 system.


A couple of days ago I purchased the Windows 10 Home programme from the UK Microsoft Store and proceeded to download it without apparent difficulty until, suddenly, all instructions and information appeared in Greek. I attempted to log-in but the message came back that I had entered the wrong password. I tried a number of times - using the same correct log-in information, as well as previously-held passwords - but without success.


My Greek is not fluent so I was obliged to call in a local technician who told me that the log-information was out-of-date and that to proceed I would need to obtain a 'Code' from Microsoft that would enable me to register a new password and only then would I be able to log-in.


Here came the problem: to obtain this essential 'Code' Microsoft would have to send a message to my registered telephone number in London - not very helpful when I am in Athens - or by sending it to my Email address - not easy when I cannot log-in to my laptop!


Eventually I had to set-up my Email address on a neighbour's computer and was only then able to obtain the Code, register a new password, log-in and complete the download - spending an additional couple of hours to complete the task.


OK, I now have the excellent Windows 10 on my laptop but it came at an unacceptable price.

I actually had a client call yesterday with an email problem. when I tried walking him through some steps, he says "Yeah, I don't see that there, but I think it's because it's updated to windows 10. It did that a few weeks ago. I came back in on Monday, and it said Welcome to Windows 10"..... I think I'd throw the computer out the window.

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

To stop the download, uninstall the KB3035583 update (under "Control Panel > Windows Update > Installed Updates").


To get rid of the C:\$Windows.~BT folder:

• Right-click on your C: drive.
• Select "Properties".
• Click on [ Disk Cleanup ]
• After the initial scan: If you have a [ Clean up system files ] button, click it and wait for the second scan to finish.
• Scroll down the list and look for "Temporary Windows installation files" (its size should be in the gigabytes range); check the box.
• Click on [ OK ] to start the clean-up.
