  1. Problems with Instantly Resuming from Sleep

Ok, I have a problem that (AFAIK) no one else on any of the forums (and forum sites) I have visited seem to having. As per the title, I am sure you can see that it is related to my laptop going to sleep.

    The Problem:

My Dell XPS 15 (9550) seems to go to sleep properly whenever I
    • Press the power button
    • Close the lid
    • Or use the sleep function in the standard start menu
This means that whatever is on the screen fades away until all I have left is a black screen and the power button stops glowing. However, when I try to "wake it from sleep", the screen will stay black for about 4-6 seconds, and then give me the dell POST loading screen as if it is starting up from
    • Shutting down
    • Hibernating
    • Hybrid Sleep
As a result, when I first encountered this problem, I tried to check if it really was hibernating (or going into hybrid sleep) instead of standard "sleeping", because that is what it looks like. So, I left some file explorer tabs open and a Microsoft edge window open and put it to "sleep". The open windows (file explorer and Microsoft edge) did not load up after the computer was back in a useable state (after the dell POST screen). This leads me to believe that the computer is not going into hybrid sleep or hibernate when I put it to sleep, but is doing an action that is more similar to the shut down function.

This is what the screen looks like when I "wake" it from sleep (also known as the dell POST screen)

    Resolutions I have tried:

    • Resetting my power plan to its default settings in windows 10
    • Disabling and re enabling hibernate/hybrid sleep (via CMD)
    • Reinstalling Windows 10 (Fresh - latest version)
    • Updating Device Drivers (both windows update and device manager)
    • Resetting all BIOS settings to factory defaults

    My System Specs:

    • Intel Core i7 6700hq
    • 16 GB DDR4 2133mhz RAM
    • Nvidia GeForce GTX 960m
    • 256 GB Samsung PM951 NVME SSD (this is the stock SSD that came with my XPS 15 9550)
    • 4k (3840x2160) "Infinity - Edge" Screen

I appreciate all the help I can get on this topic, so thank you in advance.
(Ps. this is my first "complaint - oriented" forum post

    :)

Problems with sleep mode in windows 10

    Hi Lee,

You mentioned in your original post that you are randomly unable to resume from Sleep mode. This could be caused if your system have encountered a system problem while in Sleep mode or when going to or resuming from Sleep mode. May we have an update if you
were able to update your Realtek drivers, and if updating it have helped lessen the Sleep problem?

We look forward to your response.

  3. Bluetooth will not connect when the PC wakes up from sleep on Windows 10.

restarting is never a problem. Lose the drivers only when resuming from sleep.

  4. Problems with Instantly Resuming from Sleep

    Hi ProGamer2099

So if you disable hibernation with command prompt(admin)

    powercfg -h off

it will still behave the same, correct?

If so take the battery right out and see if that changes behaviour. Within the advance power mgmt setting there is a heading for Battery and it has some interesting settings, like see a critical battery event - shut down. Removing the battery is a fast way to test.

  5. Hi, Caledon,

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, I have disabled the hibernation (and hybrid sleep) feature using the "powercfg -h off" command. When I go to the battery tab, it still says "hibernate":

However, when I click on it, it gives me 2 options, shut down and sleep:

As for the battery removal, I will need to get a torx t5 screwdriver to remove the back panel of my dell XPS 15, so that may take a while

  6. Okay. Maybe hold on that. I was hoping for a quick test not a disassemble. Maybe as hibernation is disabled it resorts to shutdown when this condition occurs.

If you change setting to sleep maybe it won't shut off. Saying that you likely won't be able to reset to hibernate. The options have been reduced.

There was a time when there were several options under this heading, one was do nothing. I was using in an old device, then it changed and I was forced to pull battery. Not sure why they couldn't leave alone.

Could you also check your Dell BIOS for anything related to power to ensure something isn't set there. I understand some Dell BIOS's can awaking a powered down device so we want to ensure some else isn't set that is working differently with windows 10.

I think you device is powering down. Is anything being recorded in Reliability History or the event manager.

  7. Ok, I have a lot of stuff to say:

    • I think it might be something other than shut down, as it does not say, shutting down when I put my laptop to sleep
    • I have already clean installed windows 10 3 times, so it might not be a windows 10 problem
    • I have already gone through my bios, checked all the settings and have not found anything related to this "action"
      • I have also reset my bios, so that did not change everything, not to mention, i have updated to the latest bios version as well
    • This has just recently started happening, as it was perfectly fine before
    • Sometimes, (very rarely, mind you) it does work as intended, but the next day it has the same problem again
    • My device does not go to this state of "sleep", on its own, so going back to the battery part - It probably isn't that
    • Finally, after everything that I have done, I think it is probably faulty hardware (my bet is on the motherboard) in my XPS 15 that is causing this
      • I do have a warranty, so I can replace it if need be (though I would prefer not going that route)

Thanks for any help you can give with this info.

  8. Problems with Instantly Resuming from Sleep

Hi, Caledon, thanks for your help and all, but I managed to fix it myself. Apparently, this issue was solved in a recent bios update provided by Dell. Specifically, that is BIOS v1.2.25. I was using BIOS v1.2.19 before, and after updating, all seemed to be well. Thanks for your help anyway!
