Windows 10: Prolific USB to Serial Convertor issue since last update

Since the last Windows 10 update, my Prolific USB to serial converter began dropping out requiring me to unplug it and plug it back in about every 3 to 6 hours. As of yesterday, it stopped working entirely. Today I may have found the cure, but not yet sure. I went to Device Manager and expanded the USB to Serial Comm Port settings. Under the Power Management tab, I found that the boxes for "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" and "Allow this device to wake the computer" were both checked. I unchecked both settings and everything s

Have now got things working in a rather 'round-about' way.

I have 2 USB - Serial Interface cables.

1. The older which used to previously work on Windows 10 still works OK on a Windows XP Laptop proving that the interface is still functional.
2. The newer interface cables when connected to Windows 10 automatically installs the drivers & works on Windows 10, but will not work on Windows XP (I don't have a driver disk for this cable but it is CH340 v3.4.2014.8)
3. If I uninstall all relevant drivers, then install my original Vista Driver v3.2.0. & plug in the interface cable, Windows 10 will then update drivers BUT with Code 10 error. If I now update drivers back to v3.2.0.0 it works & I have a singe interface cable that works on both Windows 10 & Windows XP
   
   
   
   
   
   However, when I unplug the cable & re-insert, Windows 10 will automatically update the drivers to the NON-Working ones & I have to then re-select the v3.2.0.0 ones every time.
   
   Is there a way to stop Windows 10 from updating these drivers every time the cable is inserted?
   I've tried changes the System settings for updates but without success.

I've previously had this working on my system but, for whatever reason, it's no longer being recognised by my mapping software when I attempt to transfer routes to my GPS.

As you can see the driver is installed but with an exclamation mark to indicate a problem.

Searching automatically for an update does not work & when I manually select the driver that I have, it comes with the comment that the correct driver is installed - but still not working.





Any suggestions or comment appreciated.

 

PROLIFIC USB-TO-SERIAL COMM PORT WINDOWS 10

The final definitive guide for fixing the failure of the (PL2303) Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port driver in Windows 10, step by step:

First, install the latest driver for the PL2303 USB-to-Serial adapter from Prolific's website; then

Download older driver that is compatible with Windows 10:

1. Download the core driver files (.cab .sys .inf) for version 3.3.2.102 (32bit and 64bit files):

2. Uncompress into a directory.

Install older driver to fix error/failure:

1. Open Device Manager and right click on the failed Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port device;

2. Select "Update Driver software ...";

3. Select "Browse my computer for driver software";

4. Select "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer" (other driver versions visible here);

5. Select "Have Disk ...", and then browse or paste the path to the "Prolific_Win8_x64_x86" directory;

6. Click Next to install;

7. Close.

Stop Windows from loading the latest driver and overwriting the fix:

1. Open "Device Manager";

2. Locate the adapter and check if the Exclamation mark is showing for the Code 10 error;

If the error doesn't show, remove and re-insert the adapter from the USB port until it does (this will load the latest version);

3. Right-Click on the failed device and Select "Uninstall";

4. Complete the uninstall process (delete installed files!) and remove and re-insert the adapter from the USB port. This will remove the latest version driver files but leave the compatible version in place;

5. Done! The failed driver will not load.

Please let me know if the steps here need modification due to error or changes in the OS. This worked for the Anniversary version of Windows 10. Cheers!
