Question about using Rufus to create a Bootable USB flash drive

    I go here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10
I click on Download tool now
    Then I run it.
    Click Accept
Check Create Create Installation Media (USB flash drive, DVD or ISO file) for another PC and click Next
Select Language, Edition (Windows 10) and Architecture (64-buit (x64)
Leave Use the recommended options selected and click Next
Select ISO file and click Next
PIck where I want the ISO to be created, give it a name I want and click Save
    Click Next
    Download starts

Once it finishes I then use Rufus to create the Flash drive from the ISO.

Question about using Rufus to create a Bootable USB flash drive

If you choose to save the Iso file you will.

But I`d have to assume that even if you create a usb or dvd installer using the MCT the Iso file would be somewhere on your PC, but who knows where, most likely in your downloads folder.

    Just follow Z`s instructions.

And going back to your 1st post, of course the usb stick has to be in before you proceed to use Rufus. If not there`s no usb stick for Rufus to find.

You should not be having all this trouble to create a simple usb installer for W10

  5. Thanks mate..those instructions are crystal clear..cheers. The only problem I'm having now is with the 16gb USB flash drive. When I used the Media Creation Tool and it failed at 50% while creating the media. It corrupted my flash drive..presumably while formatting it. It wouldn't format in Windows when I tried..just told me to insert disc. So I went to Disk Management where it showed flash drive was unallocated space. I created simple volume, assigned a drive letter, set Fat32 and quick format. It brought the drive back again so it was visible under This PC. I'm in the middle now of trying to suss out how to set the drive letter back to being dynamic instead of the static one I had to assign when setting up the Simple volume. I'll never use the media creation tool again for the whole process

I wouldn`t either, just download the Iso file so you have it.

I have a folder full of Iso`s on many different drives *Biggrin Linux, Mint, Zorin, W7, every version of W10 etc.

There`s no need to go through all this hassle every time you want to create an installer.

Saw something in a previous post that confuses me. I am about to download the media creation tool to a USB drive. I will select the ISO option and use the download to install Creator version 1709 onto a laptop running Anniversary edition that will not recognize the existence of the Creator version. The USB drive is formatted in NTFS, and my computer uses UEFI. I have read that newer UEFI based computers will only start from an NTFS flash drive. But some say that only a flash drive formatted in FAT 32 can be used for startup. Or, doesn't the drive format matter any more? Does anyone know for for sure which is correct?

Question about using Rufus to create a Bootable USB flash drive

A MBR partitioned USB flash drive with a FAT32 partition marked as active is universal. It will boot in both legacy BIOS and UEFI computers. If you don't mark the partition as active, then it will boot in UEFI only.
