Question About Windows 10's New "Download And Install Now" Windows Update Option?

    Guys,

I understand that in Windows 10, build 1903, a new feature called "Download and Install Now" will be offered in the Windows Update query for new version builds when they are available for your system. Users will always have the option to manually install feature updates until the current Windows 10 build on your computer is about to expire, At that time, the new feature build will be installed automatically.

What this means is that only security and stability updates will have full automatic options. The manual install of feature updates will be an Action Center notification that an update is waiting, But the user will have the option to wait until the old build is just about to expire before the new Windows feature updates are installed on their own. (Typical support for Windows 10 feature builds is 18 months.) All Windows 10 users will also have the option to pause other updates, (security and stability patches) in seven-day cycles for up to thirty-five days. (Five times each time.) This helps the user make sure that there aren't any last minute hiccups with updates.

I read that the "Download and Install Now" is coming for build 1803 and build 1809. Is this true? Or does the "Download and Install" new manual Windows Feature Update Build not begin until build 1903 is on the system?

Microsoft to make Windows 10 updates mandatory

Well, at the moment at least, you can choose to defer upgrades. Under Settings > Windows Updates > Advanced options you need to check the box labeled "Defer upgrades". What does that do? Good question. The answer I've found might illuminate it to a degree.

I hear this only applies to Pro and Enterprise editions. But I can't verify that.

    Windows 10 forced download

^This, then reboot and go to manually update windows. Find KB3035583 in the list of available updates, right-click and "Hide this update" so it doesn't get installed again next go around.

    Windows 10 forced download

To stop the download, uninstall the KB3035583 update (under "Control Panel > Windows Update > Installed Updates").

To get rid of the C:\$Windows.~BT folder:
    • Right-click on your C: drive.
    • Select "Properties".
    • Click on [ Disk Cleanup ]
    • After the initial scan: If you have a [ Clean up system files ] button, click it and wait for the second scan to finish.
    • Scroll down the list and look for "Temporary Windows installation files" (its size should be in the gigabytes range); check the box.
    • Click on [ OK ] to start the clean-up.
