Windows 10: Question Regarding Activation in Windows 10

I want to know, what would happen if Windows 10 is used without activation. I came to know through one of my friend that Windows 10 comes for free,officially. He directed me to this website https://www.microsoft.com/en-in/software-download/windows10, to corroborate his statement.


He further told me that even if Windows 10 is not activated, it is genuine. If it is not activated, I can't personalize Windows the way I want, otherwise, all other things are accessible and even Windows Defender could be used without hassles, he claimed.


Now, I couldn't really believe that and had to come here for a detailed explanation whether he is correct or not, and that what will happen if it is not activated. Also, please tell me how long Windows 10 could be run without activation.

it should activate automatically when online
if you want todo a clean install after that simply boot from your windows 10 installation media and when prompted for a key during install/post install select skip ..
it will re-activate within 5M of being online
