Questions regarding Backup (AKA File History) behaviour.

I have two questions. I know what I think the answers should be, but I don't want to assume:

    1. In the case of the working file continuing to exist, does File History retain its most recent backup even if it's older than the "Keep my backups" period? Example: Let's say I set "Keep my backups" to 6 months. I do an initial backup. Many of the files I never touch. Seven months from now do I still have a backup of those unchanging files or has File History deleted its one and only initial backup of those files because they were older than 6 months.

    2. In the case of a working file that is deleted, will File History delete its backup after the "Keep my backups" period expires?

    File History restart

    Hi Jim,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community forums.

To change the backup drive for File History, the current process should be stopped. I suggest you to try the steps listed below to stop file history on an older drive and restart it on a new drive:

    Change File History backup drive:

    • Open Settings and navigate to Update & Security > Backup.
    • Click on More Options, scroll down to locate
Backup to a different drive section, and choose Stop Using Drive.
    • Plug in the new storage drive, navigate to Settings > Update & Security > Backup,
      and choose Add a Drive.
    • Restart File History and configure it by referring to the article

    Hope it helps.
