Quick question about UEFI before installing Windows 10

    Hi,

A snippet from the MB manual:

So yes, by disabling "Windows 8/10 Features" it should then automatically be set to UEFI only.
Pls. insert your installation media and reboot. It should launch setup as there is no OS on the HDD.

Thanks. But if I disable Windows 8/10 features, don't I lose the Secure Boot option? I want keep that enabled.

You have to have the Windows 10 USB flash drive inserted when you power on your computer if you want to be able to boot from it.

Quick question about UEFI before installing Windows 10

    Hi,

I suggest you install first and later on we can check if we can re-enable secure boot. As it is now, it's totally irrelevant since you don't have any OS on the disk yet anyhow.

I just wanted to be sure I am installing it in UEFI mode. I don't want to try installing with the wrong settings.

With my settings matching this thread I get the reboot loop to the BIOS. That's why I'm confused.

If you install it in legacy mode, it's not the end of the world. You wasted 1/2 hour on the install, figure out what you have to change, delete the partitions on the hard drive and try again.

    Hi,

With no bootable media present that's to be expected.

Quick question about UEFI before installing Windows 10

    Gotcha.

Okay, so I just finished the install. It boots fine now straight to Windows 10 with Windows 8/10 mode selected in the UEFI /BIOS, CSM disabled and Secure Boot enabled. The only thing that confused me is I clicked "next" at the prompt to select a drive instead of "new", and it went right to installing. I'm guessing that it created all the necessary partitions?

How can I confirm now that it installed in UEFI mode?

And one other quick question - I have all my motherboard drivers already downloaded from Gigabyte's site, along with their APP Center software. But I see the motherboard also has an xpress install option, where I can have it install all necessary drivers and I can select which software to install. Does that work as expected or is it safer/better to manually install the drivers using the exe. files I downloaded from Gigabyte?

I always install manually because my Motherboard drivers DVD installs Norton Security Suite and other software I don't want or use.

    Hi,

I'm pretty sure it did but one way to check it is to open a command prompt (admin) and run the following commands:

    Diskpart
    Lis dis

The output will show the M2 drive and if you see an * at the end under GPT then you know for sure the install is UEFI.

As for drivers, check first if you need to install OEM drivers as W10 is supporting ever more hardware.

Yeah, I installed manually just to make sure. Device manager shows no red X marks so I guess I'm good to go.

How can I confirm that Windows installed in UEFI mode? Is there a way to confirm that?

Press Win + R keys to open a run dialog. Run msinfo32

Somewhere about the 14th line down in the system summary is the bios mode.

Quick question about UEFI before installing Windows 10

    Hi,

On the same page you can also see if secure boot is enabled or not. IMHO it will show enabled.

Why do I always forget msinfo32 is still around..... *Redface

    Thanks for all the help.

I just checked Secure Boot using "powershell confirm-SecureBootUEFI" at an elevated command prompt, and it said false. What can I do? I have it set to enabled in the BIOS. But when it is in the Bios it shows it is currently not running in Secure Boot.

    I ran msinfo32:

    BIOS Mode - UEFI
    Secure Boot State - Off

In the BIOS, here's what's listed for Secure Boot:

"Secure Boot can be enabled if 1.System running in User mode with enrolled Platform Key (PK) 2.CSM function is disabled"

    Secure Boot State: Disabled
    Secure Boot: Enabled
    Secure Boot Mode: Standard
