Windows 10: Raw formatted my external

Ok so I recently accidently made my external USB drive into a raw, I was wondering if I could some how get it back, I think it still has the files on it, I got it so windows finally recognizes it but all it wants to do is format it. I want to keep all the files still on it can someone please help. I am not the one that did it, I was installing things on my flash drives like utilities for later and for some reason the install program started installing onto my external even though my target drive was my flash drive.

Can you convert multiple NEF files to JPEG without downloading external converter software?

When downloading files from my Nikon taken in RAW format, they down load as NEF files. Is there a way to convert multiple files to JPEG (or other formats) without having to download external converter software that may be unsafe?

 

Windows 10 and external Harddrives

The make of the computer is an HP Pavilion. Prob 7 years old now. The external HD is a 500GB HP Pocket Media.

The drive is listed as G: 465.75 GB (RAW) and its status is healthy

Yes, I tried it on my work laptop which is a lenovo thinkpad running Windows 10 and the same issue pops up. Data is considered RAW and wants to format.

This all happened since the upgrade to Windows 10. The day I upgraded the external HD was working great, plugged it in and then backed up everything. Now I cant get at it.

 

Your HD became RAW (Corrupted Master Boot Record) for one of the reasons below:

• HD is going bad
• Power Surge
• You unplug the cable and did not use "Safely Remove" while the HD is performing disk I/O

nope, it became raw because the program I used was trying to use it as a boot drive so it attempted to reformat but I stopped it instantly. I would rather not have to fix it from a boot, I need a good way to do it from windows. I dont wanna be sitting in a black screen for 6hrs+ while some random program may or may not fix my hdd.

 

Get ahold of an Ubuntu live USB, don't install just "try Ubuntu" and in the live environment mount the RAW disk and see if you can see your files and transfer them somewhere else (drag & drop) then let the RAW disk format, or you can use GParted in the live environment and format there, than place your files back on the disk.

 

Cliff knows his stuff on this. Suggest you follow instructions....

Mine "went RAW" with Windows 10 Insider Build 10547 when I was trying to create a bootable USB drive. Someone said to format it so I did and that's when things went haywire.

Since I'm not an Ubuntu user (been thinking about it), I'm not understanding what you mean by "Ubuntu live USB".

 

When you download Ubuntu and burn it to a USB or DVD, then boot to it, you get 2 options, "Try Ubuntu now" and "Install", you choose the Try Ubuntu and it runs in you RAM just like Macrium Reflect does. That is a Live Disk.

That would be reason #3 when system is performing I/O. Unplug it, cancel it, stop it. are the same

What to expect:

1st find your drive and mount it by right click menu




Then click the Ubuntu icon in the upper left
to get to their "Apps Screen" and type gparted
and click the icon that comes up




Pick your device(there is no drive letter in Linux, they use paths)
from the drop down menu.




Then you can go to town and reformat and/or create a new partition
move partitions, shrink and expand them(it uses a graphical slider, much easier than windows here)

 

my hdd is done xferring all old files finally however now when I try to format it I get this pop up



I had a kali linux live cd and used it in order to see if I could format from there but its not even on the list from there, but it is in windows. any suggestions, I wouldnt think using ubuntu would get much different results from what I got with kali.
